Default LS/VTEC safe to turbo?

I dont want to push alot of psi but I do want to turbo it if it is safe.

Engine
LS/Vtec
2001 B18B1 Block
1999 B16 SiR Head
1999 B16 Si Tranny
Type R Pistons
DC Headers
355cc Injectors
Chipped Crome p72
12.0:1 compression

the block has been blueprinted and balanced and the head polished...
Ive heard that its a bad idea to turbo my motor and I also have heard it would be good...

what do you guys think and suggest?

too high in general? or just to high to turbo?

cause I have heard that if I turbo my motor with my compression it will blow my motor extremely fast

what do you suggest then for a little more power? I hate to say it but I am getting bored with my setup and I have only had it for a month now. I know I still have the stock cams and fuel rail...

should those be my next step?

Get that compression lower before you boost it. Thicker Head gasket may work.

Not true....Contrary to what people will tell you, you CAN turbo it; however, the static compression ratio will limit your power output on pump gas grade fuel. If you run high enough octane, you can do it. For all you people who think its not possible, consider if you will, diesel trucks. They run a static compression from 15-18:1 and are still turboed. Its a matter of bottom end strength and a high enough octane to avoid detonation.

The stock fuel rail will support over 500whp and is not going to help you in any way unless you're making that kind of power...which you're not. Upgrading from the stock cams will yield an increase, but if you're serious about making more power, look into a turbo setup with a higher octane fuel and/or alky/water injection system.

Your right schister66, but diesel and gasoline are two totally different things when talking about how they handle they're c/r's. You dont have to take as great caution to detonation with a diesel like you do with gasoline either. Diesel dont rely on spark when running. What makes a diesel go is is the unstableness of the diesel at such a high c/r (15.1 up to 22.1) at which point it combusts, thats how the diesel is turned into energy, not a spark. Agreeing with schister66 again you'll need to take great care in fuel managment, as well as high octane.

Dont worry about it. Most people forget that higher compression really only limits the amount of power output on a certain fuel grade. Theoretically, you could have a 100:1 compression engine and turbo it if there was a fuel available that wouldn't detonate under those conditions.

Plan ahead and figure out how you're going to avoid detonation and then heed the advice below

you can definitely turbo it, but you need to do some planning before you just slap a turbo on there. like what are your power goals? is it a daily driver? and if you actually have a budget that will allow it, cause it ain't cheap.

Default Thanks

Im looking for ~250 whp at the "end" of my build

Im at ~175 whp right now... maybe more, not sure cause I havent had it dynoed recently....

I am pretty much going to base my budget on what I want to do. I will save like crazy when I want to do something...

250whp should be safe even on Premium pump gas with the right setup. For that power goal, the turbo setup shouldn't put you back to far in the $$ department.

Once you are turbo, you'll have so much fun with it. 250 hp isn't a bad goal for pump gas. I assume it's also going to be DD, right?

what itr pistons are you using? jdm or usdm? what rods? ls? jdm pistons on ls rods should net you around 11.6 CR, not 12.0.

imho, turbo and DD isn't usually the best combo. get a nice tri-y header of your choosing, 2.5" exhaust, aftermarket or itr intake mani, larger TB, and with that 11.6 CR - get some nice cams/valvetrain to take advantage of that. like skunk2 pro 1s or BC 3, for example.

Your motor as of now is built for N/A, so why dont you actually use your motor to its full potential. You have a good base for a monster ls-v you just need some better parts.

Skunk 2 or itr intake mani
Slightly larger throttle body
Skunk 2 s2's or pro 1's with springs and retainers to compliment
A real header RMF, hytech, or even a replica would suit you
a really good tune

with that you Should (will) break into the 200whp range, depending on the cams and tune, its possible to see 210

There is a huge dif between 175 and 210 N/A whp.
