How to make it faster....
Hi guys I'm new to the foreign car game up until about a month ago I had never owned or thought about owning anything that wasn't domestic as I only worked on pre 1985 vehicles but I finally broke down(mainly for the gas mileage) and bought a 2000 Civic 5spd which came with the d16y8 which I understand is the crappiest engine they come with if your looking to have fun. I'm just curious if I can do anything to soup her up to a good point without a engine swap?! Of TE engine/tranny away is the real choice then what are my best options. Like I said I'm a noob to this world but I wanna learn.

Engine theory is the same regardless of car/engine origin. Start with breathing and go from there.
The D16Y8 is not the crappiest engine though it is not without fault.
