if your cel is on then chances are there might be something wrong. unless youre talking about the "maintenance required" light, in which case you just stick your key in the hole below it to reset it to green
you also might not have clicked your gas cap 3 or more times the last time you put gas in it. it should take a couple trips to go off

its def the check engine light, i put a new o2 sensor in rear, didnt have one in there, so the check engine light was on. now that i put one in there do you have to have obd II scan tool to reset.
