hello guys i just took the head off my motor so as to change the Headgasket.

and when i checked the cylinder head it seemed warped in the middle as there was a dip when i place a ruler across it !!

how can i ensure that the head is flat ???
will this be a big problem if i just put the head back on ???
if i sand the high area's so they match the low ones...should it be ok ???
what paper is best to use ??

hahaha, you need to get it machined, not sanded down -.-

are you SURE your head is warped. a ruler could be out of whack. use something you KNOW FOR A FACT is straight/flat.

You need to take it to a machine shop, have them use specific tools for checking warped parts. Then, let them machine it to spec.

You cannot go off the judgent of a ruler. You need a actual Straight edge to check for warpage. take it to a machine shop and have them deck it to put it back to spec.

Definetly...drop the sand paper and walk away..call machinist and bring it to them..

ok i read if i use a service plate and abrasive paper of 400 (waterproof silicon carbide and i placed paper of the surface plate and rub against the gasketed surface ...if the warping is not too bad it would be ok.

i will check the surface again with a better instrument


if i get the head machined will it have a higer compressio ratio
and will i need to use cam gears to bribg it back into timing range ???

You could try using spacer plates or something, I have no experiance with this but hopefully someone else on here does. Just thought I would throw that out there.

in fact, dont take it to the machinists...ask them to come get it...incase you change your mind in teh favor of sand paper again.

******* **** why do people try to be cheap asses? Do it right by having it sent to a machine shop. You've got people telling you not to try sanding the head, and yet you keep saying you still want to sand the head. This isn't some trial and error type **** bro - IT'S A CYLINDER HEAD!!!

Depends on how warped the head is. If it's warped badly enough to require a pretty deep cut then yes the CR will be raised slightly.

Lastly let me say this, and it's my professional opinion:

DO NOT EVER DO A HEAD GASKET JOB WITHOUT SENDING THE HEAD TO THE MACHINE SHOP FIRST TO HAVE IT CHECKED AND MOST LIKELY MILLED.

Head gaskets rarely blow without something causing it, such as heat and a warped cylinder head and/or block.

Did the engine overheat?

Is it turbocharged? (I presume it is if you've got 300+hp)

its on a suzuki swift gti i got for free..which is why i dont want to spend to much on it

the haedgasket went on it i could tell this as the chamber on cylinder chamber no 4 was very clean

i just checked the warping again and its about a mm in certain places

ok you guys are right ..thanks for making me laugh ..but in the service manuel i have it does say use the 400 paper if that done work then get a new head

it's not that expensive to get the head milled. Just freaken do it unless you wonna take it off again. Plus ruler won't tell you if it's warped or not. You need a machinist straigh edge.
