Default 2000 Civic DX P1381 & P0304 trouble codes--CKF Bypass trick maybe?

I had been pulling my hair out trying to track down a CEL 9.

here's the thread on it. https://honda-tech.com/forums/honda-civic-del-sol-1992-2000-1/2000-civic-dx-p1381-p0304-trouble-codes-2778590/.

So, I took it to the dealership to have them look at it, TWICE. Today, they called me back and told me they found a short on the ecu side of the harness (the blue plug). This jogged my memory about the CKF bypass trick. I bought this car used, so, don't know the full history. It jogged my memory b/c a while back, the water pump went out and we replaced the pump & timing belt. While we were in there, we noticed that the CKF sensor was mangled and decided to replace it.

What I'm thinking happened was that someone did the bypass trick in lieu of replacing the CKF sensor, and we (being ignorant of that fact) replaced the ckf sensor when we replaced the water pump. The old wires for the ckf sensor looked as if they'd been frayed a long time ago. So, we came to the conclusion that this is something that had been like this for some time. The car never had any running problems.

So, what would happen if the car HAD a CKF sensor and someone did the bypass trick? Would that potentially lead to this issue of a CYP sensor code?

Thanks in advance

Shouldn't cause any issues. Its not the CYP sensor you tap into any. CKF trick taps into the CKP sensor. My understanding in simple terms is that the ECU compares the signals from the CKP and CKF sensors and both should be the same, or at least very close. I believe the CKF trick just sends the CKP sensor output to the ECU input for both CKP and CKF.

That's where I believe you're wrong. In the trick, you jump the CYPM to the CKFM and the CYPP with the CKFP.

The stealership quoted me $160 to fix the wiring problem. The car had previously had the CKF bypass trick done (C22 (CKFP) & C29 (CYPP) soldered together and C30 (CYPM) & C31 (CKFM) soldered together). I thanked them for the diagnosis and was happy to pay the $45 diagnostic fee--the thing had me stumped!

While I was driving it, the CEL was flashing, indicating a misfire. The dealership told me that they didn't see any sign of the car actually misfiring.

I took the car home and desoldered the wires and fixed the CEL 9. On the trip back from my parents' over Christmas, a new CEL popped up.

Evidently they were wrong about the car not misfiring. Now, the car is throwing a CEL 67 (P0420) indicating cat issues. This is something I never noticed due to the CEL 9 being ever present.

Just wanted to give you guys an update as to what happened here. God knows I hate to search for solutions and never hear back from people that are able to FIX their problems!

Cliff notes: CKF bypass trick will work to bypass the CKF sensor. IF you actually have the bypass trick done due to not having the sensor or having a bad one and you replace it, it WILL cause a CEL 9, and possibly a misfire.

Im having this very same problem on a 2000 Civic Lx with a y7 motor and auto tranny. I was misfiring like crazy and having power issues but wasnt throwing codes 9 and 67. I replaced the plus, wires, cap, and rotor. NO CEL for 1 full day. Then out of no where I get a cel for 9 &67. This has been the WORST CODE search for trouble shooting I have ever had. car runs and drives fine. I just can stand knowing the cel is on and I know there is SOMETHING wrong. This thread is a stepping stone for recovery for me. I hope I can get it worked out now. The last thing I want to do is drive my hatch to work and have it jacked. I NEED my daily driving with NO CELs!!!!
