jack up car... take a 19mm socket and turn your crank pulley until the white mark(TDC) on the crank pulley lines up with the mark on the crank plastic cover. or you can take off your valve cover and take off the spark plug on cylinder #1. Then you jack up the car and take a 19mm socket and turn the crank pulley and look into the hole where you pulled out your spark plug.. you should see that the pistons reach the top or you can take your dip stick and stick it in to see when the piston reaches the top

o.. i forgot.. do i need to take off all the belt on the crank pulley (ac, alternator, etc...)

Another way to tell if the #1 cylinder at tdc, on the compression stroke is to rotate the motor (as stated before) untill the marks on your cam gears are in the correct position. Then, take off the distributor cap. If the rotor is pointed at #1 cylinders spark plug port your at tdc on the compression stroke. At least, thats what it says in my Haynes.
