Default found this today....blown head gasket?..

i was looking at my motor today and this is what i found...
oil between the head and the block...noticed a little under the distributor
thought it wasnt a big deal but then behind my exhaust manifold there seems to be alot of oil comming down from the top...wich would be between the head and block....
car over heats when i take it to high rpms sometimes not always...but i was thinking that could be a seperate problem...no white smoke
motor is a b20vtec turbo..everything is new...

what do you guys think??

oil cant escape to the outside of the engine because of a blown headgasket

when the HG blows its normally between a cylinder and the coolant jackets, in which instance oil can get into the coolant, or coolant can get into the combustion chamber and blow steam out the exhaust.

try cleaning around the head in all the nooks and crannies and let the oil drip back down, that's how you'll find your leak

common leaks are the dizzy o-ring, vtec solenoid gasket, valve cover gasket

That is what I thought, I have the same problem and had a honda tech look at it, he seems to think it is the head gasket. Basically he said the head gasket can leak coolant and oil, I always thought just coolant.

I had it happening for years without issues, I have to check the oil once a week to watch it, but just keep adding oil and still no issues, no smoke, no mixing of coolant and oil.

you may have a problem with the head lifting at high rpms, are you using head studs or stock bolts?

clean it up real good all around.
If you haven't, replace your cam seal and dizzy o ring. I would remove the vtec soleniod and put some gasket maker on it and reinstall it. Should take care of that side of the leaks

i have a similar wet spot on my motor around the dizzy-side of the head.

distributor o-rings are known points of failure - car overheats, o-ring gets hard and crispy, oil drips and runs onto heater hose right below, hose breaks down, then more problems. I have odyssey vans and so far 5/6 have needed the o-ring replaced.

i will be tracking down my oil source in a few weeks but here is my plan...

oil/filter change
just changed vtak solenoid to be safe
distributor o-ring
new head-gasket w/headstuds
will be using parts cleaner to clean ALL oil and grime around headgasket
watch for highest point of oil visible

keep us posted i have a b20v with similar issues. i would love to figure this out.

definitely could just be an oil leak or worn out gasket that needs replaced. did the car overheat at all is that why your asking about your head gasket. if its running normal temp then there is no blown head gasket or is anything wrong with it but a leaky gasket.

i am using arp head studs...

at first i thought it might come from the top...like the valve cover...or dizzy..but then i noticed the oil behind the exhaust manifold..wich made me think it was the head gasket...

yes it over heats and random times...i let it sit for a while and then open the radiator add a bit of water and then its back to normal....but i am thinking i have a small leak somewhere because it does not over hear every time...

okay so today i had my brother rev the motor while i cheked to see if any oil would come out from anywhere...i was not able to find anything..but i also see oil on my oil pan where the hose coming from the turbo connects to the fitting on the pan...and also around the pipe where my dip stick goes into...

im getting really frustrated taking it into the shop tomorow..see if they can help...

when i reved the motor...at high rpms i see smoke coming out from the valve on the valve cover...is that normal?...it comes out for like a second and goes away...

do you have a properly working pcv system? reason I ask is I worked 5 years at jiffy lube seen the worst of the worst there, completely blocked pcv systems will cause everywhere to leak, also smoke will pour out of dipstick tubes and oil caps etc... not saying its that but its easy enough to check

yes that little bit of white smoke coming from the valve cover vent hose is normal in a boosted vehicle. if he is boosted he should be using a open catch can system with a breather and not have a pcv check valve should be removed.when boosted leaving the stock pcv valve int will cause the bottom end to build up pressure and make the rings blow out and cause a bunch of blow by. im kind of confused now. the engine your posting up is not boosted and your last post seems to lead toward that your motor is boosted. please inform us if it is or not.

Does it sputter at all under high RPM? Or seem to lose power?

took it to the shop where i usually take my car to....
the guy looked at it and said it could be the line that conects to my turbo..that runs near my exhaust manifold...
but that he will check it out..so i wont know until maybe tomorow or the weekend..

so my mechanic said the leak is coming from the fittings on the lines going to the turbo... and the distributor o ring...hopefully when its taken care of it solves my problem..

leaking head gasket maybe not blown... ill would check VC gasket common problem ppl mistake a leak from a head gasket and actually a valve cover gasket

OP already had it checked out by a mechanic. he said its a fitting going to the turbo (probably the feed line) and the distributor O ring.
