Default Honda vs autozone timing belts and water pumps?

I am getting ready to change the timing belt on my 99 civic and wondered if it made much of a difference to go to advanced auto parts (or O'reilly, autozone, carquest, etc...) or the Honda dealer to get my timing belt and water pump? The car is by no means my baby and already has 180k miles on it so Id rather save a few bucks if you all don't think there is much difference in quality.

Yeah I saw the parts online and would save like $40. I planned on working on the car tomorrow so I have a patience issue at hand . I may just bite the bullet and wait to do the job to order honda stuff.

I wouldn't use anything but an OEM water pump. I've used aftermarket in the past, they don't last. Timing belt either OEM or Gates.

ive installed somewhere near 100 (possibly more) aftermarket water pumps and timing belts.on everything from mitsubishi, toyota, hyundai and of course a ton of hondas.
never had a belt fail. had a few water pumps fail but not so many that i would never install aftermarket stuff again.
if you are on a budget go with the after market parts at 180k factory parts seem like a waste to me. from what i have seen by the time a aftermarket pump is worn out it is time to change the belt.
with that said i would stay away from auto zone parts the failure rate from there stuff is very high so as a general rule i just stay away.
jmho good luck

This. Something so critical to the health of your engine is not something to save money and sacrifice quality on.

For me it's a time issue. It farking sucks to have to replace a water pump 30k after you put it in cause it's leaking out the weep hole. Replacing a water pump is a big enough pain in the *** that I only want to do it as many times as I absolutely have to, so I want something that will last till the next timing belt replacement.

Precisely. Any job that's a royal pain, there is no reason not to use quality parts. Not even worth the risk.

Like, why on earth would you cheap out on a timing belt? Good way to destroy a motor.

I understand what you are saying and there is a sense of security going with Honda. I paid $400 for the car and it has 180,000 miles on it already so this is one of few cases where I may use a car quest belt and pump bc if it breaks in 50,000 miles or less then it is no going to break my heart to much.

Stick with Genuine Honda parts. It fits and works like it should, 100% of the time.

Check out ebay for OEM parts! That is where I got the whole kit for $149
with cam/main seal and the other 3 belts.

After my water pump began to leak(aftermarket) and I started to dig through my reciepts for it. It had less then 50k on it.

Do not go aftermarket.

I don't get this reasoning. Did you buy the car to break down? Even buying OEM you're still ahead of the game rather than if you bought another $400 car.

It's a gamble, the aftermarket water pumps are hit or miss.

I can say my last honda water pump had 170k ish miles on it and still was going fine until I did the timing belt again.

If you plan on keeping the car and since you are doing it, go OEM.

^ this

I would suggest hitting ebay and getting a belt/pump both oem. If you want to save a little get a gates belt.... but definitely do the waterpump oem

Go with ebay or carquest. ebay has oem parts cheap and carquest can also get the oem parts but cheaper than the dealer

Really? Carquest can get you a timing belt in Honda packaging?

That's interesting.

Isn't it though. Actually the last time I called carquest to price something it was a waterpump. They wanted more for a shitty remaned one than Honda wanted for a new one. I stopped calling them after that.

Btw, Y7/Y8 belts when ordered from Honda are stamped both Honda and Gates on the belt itself.

interesting way of looking at the situation its just such a no brainer since i do them all them time.
i see where you are coming from if it is a difficult thing for you to do then yeah put oe stuff on the motor.

and the reason why you can get oe parts from carquest is that they own world pac which distributes a ton of oe parts from alot of different car companies

Yeah Carquest doesn't always have OEM stuff but sometimes they do. I ordered a tensioner for my VW a while ago and it came with the OEM part number and was the same brand as OEM.

Btw a gates timing belt and tensioner is like 80 there.

I just ordered a full set on ebay for $210. That'd all OEM parts, timing belt, tensioner, oil seals, water pump, valve cover gasket, and alternator and PS belts. Its pricy and I could've gone without some parts but my car runs well and I'd like it to keep running good and leak free. The way I see it, this is one of yge only major maintenance tasks for this engine so why not spend a little more and do it right. Besides that all I have are oil changes so 200 isn't that bad for a car thats saved me a ton of money and hasn't let me down once. Plus that's cheap compared to some of the other cars I've owned...
