help me diagnose - clutch chatter?
Hey thanks for looking, I just changed out the axles and clutch on my 98 hx.
The car has 180k miles and both the clutch and axles needed to be refreshed so a friend of mine helped me swap them out. I used all honda oem quality parts and the car drives great now except when I am engaging the clutch to start from a stop, there is a vibration that seems like really aggressive clutch chatter. The whole car shakes quite a bit-- unless I raise the engine rpm then it smooths out completely.
I never feel it in between gears while I am driving, or any other time.
I know its not the motor because when I am accelerating in this rpm range while the clutch is completely engaged, it does not vibrate.
Also, maybe this is related-- I notice when I accelerate hard there is a slight vibration in the steering wheel. Its a bit more noticeable in higher rpms I think.
What is the problem here?
Thanks

resurface your flywheel. i had the same problem on my 2000 civic ex. a week later i took it back apart and got the flywheel resurfaced. unfortunately it was too late and i ripped a brand new axle boot.

Re: help me diagnose - clutch chatter?
bump
what could this be?
I really want to avoid taking the tranny off again. Is getting the flywheel resurfaced a necessity? I am not ruling out that that is the cause of the problem, but I am thinking that its not because this problem doesnt happen so much when the car is cold. Once the clutch warms up then it happens more.
Another question- The driver side longer axle has a harmonic balancer thing on it, but the new one does not.... are you suppose to transfer that over or something?
Thanks for your help.

The rubber vibration damper? Those are found on automatic driver's side axles only. The manual versions don't have it. (only difference between the two axles, someone probably replaced the axle previously and thats what was available)

My question is then, if the flywheel needs to be resurfaced, would it make sense that the clutch would not chatter if the car was cold?

Re: help me diagnose - clutch chatter?
spitfire, what ever came of this? I just put in an OEM clutch on a 98 civic with 162000 miles. The clutch chatters off the line and when I coast in second gear around turns. BAsically any low speeds. I assume I need to drive more miles and after 150 miles I do think it is lessoning. I did get the flywheel resurfaced. Also, FYI, my manual transmission car has the rubber balancer on the driverside axle and always has.
Thanks.
Thanks.
