Default HELP.. How Or Where To Check If Motor Is Stolen Or Not

Im planning on the buy a Civic with a GSR Swap.. But with the growing thefts in the city, its hard just to take someone esle word for it.. Is there a place where i can find out if motors are stolen or not.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Do the engine and transmission have VINs on them? If not, that may be an indication that they're stolen, although not always - mine don't have VINs, but I know they weren't stolen. Also, I don't think JDM stuff has vins either.

If they do have VINs, you can run a carfax on them and see what happened to the car that they came out of.

Will there are serial numbers on the tranny and engine. but my question is where can i get information to find out if its stolen or not. VINs are from the cars not the motor.. and in this case. The motor is not in the original chasis. So i dont think there is a way of running a car fax. Any one else..

the vins on the motors would be off the car that could be stolen so there for it will show up as a stolen car meaning the car was stolen and the engine was takin out, he was right. no other way.

so if they match the VIN from the civic there is a problem. because it isnt a civics motor.

what about the serial number on the motor.. lets just say in general that the motor and the tranny was from two different car. a type R tranny and a gsr motor. the motor shows the serial number no vin number and and tranny show the vin number how do i check up on the serial number on the motor. I know in my area right now most of the import/ honda acura cars that get pull over, cops are now checking on the motor if its stolen or not and i dont wanna be in the postition to where i dont have a clue. is this something that youll have to go to the dmv about or to the police station???

There is a VIN plate on the transmission...there should also be one on the block itself.

Do research before you say definitely! there are plenty of JDM and USDM engine and trans made with no vin plates

I have a JDM 1995 B18c GSR (no vin plate)

Brand New usdm Type R tranny From acura Sacramento (no vin plate)

The vin on the motor should match the car it came from and you can run a vin check here is a free site you can check.

Yes, those are the exceptions. Pre-OBD2 (95 and earlier) and brand new transmissions will not have VIN's. If it's 96+ then it should have a VIN tag.

I'm not sure what the year cutoff is for the block VIN, though.

Yes, you're right. I said that JDM stuff doesn't have vins in my original post, but I should have clarified in my second post.

Very nice link. Thanks for sharing. Curious as stated in the posts above, what if you have an obd1 engine or trans & only the block # or trani sticker is available. Where can these numbers be run?

Vin stamps are usless to run on engines because there are alot of people who switch them. Its all about the serial number.
i get exactly what hes saying You guys know the OBD1 Motors have no vins on them.Hes asking how do you run the serial number such as the one under the engine code.If your buying a motor that has no vin stamp like obd1 models the numbers are either run off the serial sticker on the tranny and the serial on the motor

Let me not even begin on how many Civics & Teggys get stolen down here in miami, its almost rarely to find a legit motor or tranny in these cars down here.
