Heater core replacement in a 93 Civic LX Sedan
My wife noticed a wierd smell coming from the vents when the fan it on. Smells like a antifreeze smell or dead animal. I guess there is a leak in the heater core.
Is this a big job on this car. Can anyone give me an estimate what it would approx cost for the labor and part? I looks like the evaporator unit has to come out from the AC unit?
Is this common for this car 10 years old and 108K miles?
Any comments would be appreciated.
Thank you,
MIchael

wrong forum. you need the EG/del sol forum..
btw, pick up a Helms factory service manual.. you'll be able to replace the heater core and anything else on the car..

i just did this to my 93 civic coupe
you have to remove the dash the gain access to the heater box
then there are about 4-6 bolts holding the box in
then remove the 2 hoses off the back of the box (in the engine bay) along with another bold right next to the hoses
then it takes a lil working to get it out
after it's out take the clips and screws out that are holding it together and you can switch the heater core
i did this because i had some furry friends make a home out of my car, they smelled real good
i'd say it will take 3 or 4hrs total to do it.
good luck

Does your car have AC, and if so did you have to remove the evaporator and freon first?
Are there any shortcuts to make it easier - not mentioned in the Honda Shop Manual? They say to remove seats, evacuate AC, ETC??
Thanks for the info

i did not have to mess with the A/C except for removing the clips on the box
you should have to remove the seats either
just remove the dash by removing all the bolts and dropping the steering column down, don't have to remove it and it should slide right out
be careful when you remove the heater box though, there will probably be some antifreeze left in it that my leak out inside your car
use some plastic with rags over it to prevent it from hitting your carpet though
