Default grinding tranny

Whenever I shift into third gear it grinds going in and when I shift into fourth it only grinds once I let out the clutch then it pops out of gear. Anyone have any idea if this is a tranny problem or the clutch? Thanks...

Sounds like you have some synchros going maybe even all of 4th..

are synchros something you can replace in the transmission? or is it better off replacing the whole unit

you can replace the synchros inside the trans for considerably less than a whole new unit. plus, then you have new pieces going inside, and gets you a fresh happy feeling versus a used trans giving you concerns like " who knows how many miles are really on it" or " how was it driven" yada yada..

example.

i had 3rd & 4th synchros go bad on my gsr trans with my ITR swap. used trans was around 1000 bucks (give or take, while back) i ended up getting synch's for both gears (275 apporx.) installed by reputable mechanic 250 and the car ran absolutely perfect from then on. sry for rambling here, just trying to give ya some insight..good luck!

well why waste money on synchro, and why go through with all the headaches?? just replace the tranny along with a new clutch. You will be golden, save the headaches!

Lol, "You will be golden"....he does have a point, depending on what tranny you have, you can get a new one for alot less than 1000$ that the guy paid above, even less than 500$, if you look around you can find D-series trannies for under 300$, and they sell OEM Replacment clutch kits in the Marketplace.

no no no, I didnt say he had a D either, im just saying, if it is, it will be cheap, if its B, then, well, can always roll ls trans if you have to, they are pretty cheap...like you said, ITR trans are pretty expensive though, they is a guy on ht that does full rebuilds with custom gearing and stuff for like 700-800
