Default Gear ratios?

1995 Honda Civic EX. D16Z6 5 speed.
I need some help. I have been itching to know the whole deal here on transmissions. I keep hearing about s20, s40, etc. My sticker on my transmission says s20. I cannot read the stamping to see if it is a a000 or b000 tranny because i don't get up under there. How do I know if I have the shorter gears? I keep hearing about people wanting the shorter gears. Here's what I know:
A. Apparently somebody had an ej and was doing 4000 revs in 3rd gear at 90 mph. Not sure about the legitimacy of this claim.
B. There seems to be some difference with 2nd gear between trannies.
C. Both have the same 1st and 5th gear.
D. I run my tranny to 3 k revs. I shift, the tach falls to 2k revs in every gear except 5th, where it will only drop to 2500 revs. So the 4 to 5 gearchange seems to be a close ratio one.

Ugh I'm so sorry, im just confused. I am about to get a clutch job done, and i'm uncertain i got the right clutch. THE LAST OWNER SWAPPED THE AUTOBOX OUT FOR A 5 SPEED. IT MATES PERFECTLY TO MY D16. NO OVERHANGS, NO CRACKS, NO MISSING BOLTS. I CANNOT GET AHOLD OF THE PREVIOUS OWNERS BECAUSE THE LAW PROTECTS THEM, SO BASICALLY I AM NOT SURE IF HE GOT THE 5 SPEED THAT ACTUALLY WENT WITH THE EX MODEL OR IF HE JUST CONJURED UP HIS OWN TRANNY (I'm still learning what trannies can go with which engines). Everything seems right, but i don't want them to drop the tranny and say I have the wrong clutch. But does that even matter? I'm not sure it does.

Back to what I was saying. My questions are:

1. how can i tell what tranny i have just by looking at the tach and speedo or watching how far the revs drop in each gear?
2. From the information I gave is there anyone who can tell me what transmission I DO have? Key information is that the 4-5 shift doesn't have as big of a rev difference as the other 3 shifts, which are roughly the same.
3. DO I HAVE THE right clutch, if I got the one for the D16Z6 5 speed?

i apologize for any confusion which may arise from this spewage.

I have the longer gears on an s20 transmission. While in 2nd gear at 4k rpm i go 40 mph. Second gear also ends right around 70-75 with my redline at 6900-7000 rpm

At 60mph you should be at roughly 3000rpm. The thing is the tachs and speedometers in these cars aren't particularly accurate. The best thing to do is get under the car and look for the stamp by the fill plug, that will absolutely tell you for sure what you have, assuming no one built a Frankenstein transmission out of parts.

Yes. All '92 - '00 Civic clutches (except '99 - '00 Si) are the same.

Thanks son. And at 60 mph I am doing 3000 revs. What does that mean though?

You can use that to figure out what transmission you have.

Thanks buddy! Turns out the guy who swapped my tranny once again did the job right. It is a B000 P20 transmission. Well done sir.
