Default 93 del sol si - d16z6 - failed smog, incorrect ignition timing

so, i FINALLY took my car in to get it smogged.
i've been dreading it and my tags are expired... i have no faith in my car
since day one when the people scammed me with it, pretty sure they gave me
fake smog papers as well >_>

ANYWAYS, i went to get my biennial smog test done and i FAILED

reason was because my timing was off by 6 points, guy said specs are 16 and i was at 10 :\ passed emissions with flying colors. Visual inspection: Tampered because i have an AEM intake... and it has 2 holes on the top so are comes in and out. any idea where i can buy block offs/caps? it's not the vac hole that sticks out... it's just two plain open holes. got it from someone like that.

but, anyways... failed due to off timing NO(PPM) MAX is 716 and i got a 764. guy told me don't bother buying a cat because most people do, but it's not the problem and it still ends up failing.

any ideas what i should do? and anyone have a guesstimate on how much it is to correct my timing? thanks.

1) Start engine and allow it to warm up until the radiator fan cycles on and off once. Service Check Connector And Data Link Connector

2) Locate the Service Check Connector behind the right kick panel, and connect the BLK and BRN wires with a jumper wire. Connecting Timing Light To Ignition Wire

3) Connect a timing light to #1 Ignition Cable and aim it at the pointer on the timing belt cover near the crankshaft pulley. 4) Ignition timing must be checked at the the proper idle speed as listed below. (M/T)

16°±2°BTDC (RED MARK) at 670 ±50 rpm (USA)
16°±2°BTDC (RED MARK) at 750 ±50 rpm (CAN)

(A/T)

16°±2°BTDC (RED MARK) at 700 ±50 rpm (USA)
16°±2°BTDC (RED MARK) at 750 ±50 rpm (CAN)

NOTE: The White mark is Top Dead Center.

5) If timing is not correct, loosen the Distributor mounting bolts (2) and rotate the Distributor housing clockwise to retard or counter-clockwise to advance the timing.

its not your crank to cam timing.

its your ignition timing.

get a timing light (jump the 2 wire connector) the one you jump for codes. (passenger side)

start the car loosen the distributor and move it back ad forth until your timing marks line up.

Note: forward is advance
Back is retard

Correct. Ignition timing is what makes your car run lean or rich. By turning the dizzy, you adjust the time when the spark ignites the fuel from TDC.

Kev
PS- this isnt very hard to do. Find a friend who has a timing light and follow the instructions givin above.
