Extremely low Gas mileage :(
Hi. I drive 1 1995 civic ex with 120,000 miles. My dad gave me this car in May and I am only getting around 22 miles to the gallon, if that much. I was wondering what are some cheap things i can do to try to improve this. i have put in new spark plugs but thats it. thanks, alex

OK, there are alot of smartasses here.
The first stuff to do is make sure everything is up to spec in terms of wear-and-tear items.
Starting with the spark plugs was good. Now check the air filter, the coolant, and all the belts.
Then move on to the fuel filter, and fuel pump, and water pump. These are all things you can change if you can do your own spark plugs.
Remember to check the oil and coolant every week or so when you go out to clean the car up. This is especially important for us Texans! Change the oil religiously every 3K or so, and you'll get another 100K out of it!

Most everybody always overlooks the #1 factor in gas mileage:
How you drive the car!
Do you beat on the car all the time? take off fast...bang the gears at 4K+ on every shift just because you want to hear your exhaust? drive 90 on the highway?
I drive like a granny and always shift at 2.5K...33 MPG in the city with my hybrid.
If I drive like MOST people do, I only get around 23 MPG.

so true.
my mom barely ever breaks the speed limit, drives at near constant speeds on highways, accelerates slowly, and brakes softly. so, she uses way less gas than normal people do (i.e. consistently gets high mpg).
