Default DIY EK Maplights!

I was bored one day searching through hondaautomotiveparts.com, and I came across the maplight assembly out of a 2000 Civic SI. An idea immediately popped into my head, "That would be cool if I had maplights in my hatch!" So, for $28 for the whole assembly, I thought to myself, what can I lose, so here it is:

Items needed
- Maplight assembly, Part #34256-SR3-901ZB
- 16-18 gauge wire
- Wire connectors
- Razor Blade
- Cardboard
- Marker
- Screwdriver
- Patience

1. First remove the driverside sun visor, and driver side A-pillar panel.
2. Take the maplight assembly and make an outline of the shape of the base onto cardboard, this will serve as a template for cutting the hole.
3. Take the template made in step 2, and trace it onto the ceiling of where you want to install the maplights.

4. Next use the razor blade and carefully cut out the outline you drew on the ceiling of the car.

5. Next, feed two wires through the ceiling, from the driver side of the ceiling to the center of the ceiling where the hole is.
6. On the maplight, there are two grounds, which you have to use solder to connect. The positive requires one female connector to attach to.
7. Connect the ground wire to a solid ground, and tap the positive wire to the positive dome light wire, which runs along the A-pillar, and it a White/Red wire.
8. Finally, insert maplight assembly into the hole which you cutout. The maplight has prongs which keep it held in place.

Hope this helps, and IMO, it is really worth it. The lights are extremely bright, and they are very useful.

So nice!

I have a question. What is the width on the light assembly? I'd like to install one in my 94 cx, but not sure if my center width is wide enough.

Thanks, and great job.

Isn't it cool when you stumble across **** like that, and it comes out clean?

My favorite way of doing things.

You think it's bright now? I must say that I replaced one of my yellow bulbs with a white one that was laying around in my garage... the difference is amazing. One side is my map light, the other side is my 'day light'... it's so bright. It sounds a bit ricey, but since it's generally never on unless you're trying to FIND something... it's actually very useful. And like I said, the other side (driver side) is still yellow and looks normal. If anyone cares I'll take a pic tonight.

thats awesome, i dont even know the si's had that. I think I will do it.

from the wiring explanation, it sounds like they come on only when you turn them on. then what do the si's do for interior lighting when the door opens....or maybe you explained it wrong....constant power would give you only lightswhen you flip the switch......can I make them come on with my door trigger?

Nice write up by the way.....keep the tech comming...!!!
