distributor identification - or swapping sensor
hey
my tach stopped working awhile back i need to fix it so i can sell it and not get lowballed. is the issue the distributor, or is it the problem is the "ignition control module" which i guess is the ignition? i also have a secondary tach spliced into the orignal tach wire going to the distributor, but thats not the problem because i checked the connection/remade and it didnt do anything. also, i have a few other dizzys that are single cams but unsure whether they are vtec or not.. i have been told its the vss sensor and i need to replace it. or is it my cluster since my speedo still works fine, and generally they both go out at the same time..
im pretty lost soo, any help?? i also heard it might be my grounds? i replaced them not to long ago.. but it kind of makes sense, i was turning when it stopped.. well doing a little burn out U turn so my engine was torqing so maybe it ripped a ground out???
after some looking i couldnt find this ground? Its the one thats rooted onto the sensors
ps. when it stopped working, it would go out of control jumping between 0-9k for a few days straight untill.. it just died.

The speed sensor has nothing to do with the tachometer. The tachometer gets its signal from the ignition control module (ICM) located inside of the distributor. If you have a 96-00 Civic, hook up an OBDII scan tool that reads engine rpm. If the scan tool is able to read engine rpm, then the tachometer itself is probably bad and needs to be replaced. Otherwise, the ICM is bad or the blue tach wire from the ICM is broken or disconnected.
Does the secondary tachometer work?

Re: distributor identification - or swapping sensor (RonJ@HT)
i see. i was really confused because theres very little data on this.
the secondary tach dosnt work either, so it leads me to believe that its the distributor. now, can i replace the icm? or do i have to get a new dizzy.. which i already found and priced out for about 50 bucks for a used one. keep in mind i have a few other dizzies but there not vtec

did some rockauto.com searching for product codes, and i found that i have to get the ICM of a dizzy from a D16y5, y7, y8.

Re: distributor identification - or swapping sensor (enot767)
RESOLVED:
i decided to take apart the distributor i had, it was a 1993 ex dizzy but the internals looked the same for the most part. i took the icm out of the older dizzy, and put it in my d16y8 dizzy, reinstalled the cap and rotor, turned the car on and my tachs magically came alive! thanks for the input - IT WAS THE IGNITION CONTROL MODULE!
