D16Z6 Timing Belt questions
Shalom, peeps!
I'm currently in the middle of my first-ever timing belt change. I have a 1994 Del Sol with the D16. Before putting everything back together, I test-fitted the crank pulley and noticed that the little key does not sit flush with the end of the crank shaft. In other words, the key protrudes from the front of the shaft snout. Consequently, when I thread the crank bolt, the bolt washer does not contact the pulley surface, but there is a small gap instead. I want to make sure that I didn't miss anything now that I still have everything taken apart. Also, when it comes to mechanical timing, I keep reading that I must line up the timing cover pointer with the white mark on the crank pulley. Well, my pulley does not have a white mark. It has two sets of grooves: The first is a triplet, with the middle groove containing a dab of red paint. A little further down (clockwise) is a doublet, but neither is marked with paint. Which groove is the pointer on the timing cover supposed to line up with? Would it be safe to line up the groove on the crankshaft that the key slides onto with the arrow on the engine (I believe it's the oil pump)?
Thanks.

Re: D16Z6 Timing Belt questions
Yeah, after a little bit of further reading, I'm beginning to suspect that I may have installed the t-belt guides incorrectly. I'll double check when I get home tonight. Sorry to beat a dead horse, but I'd better double check before I bend any valves: If my pulley has two grooves instead of one (besides the group of three), which one do I use to time the crank correctly, the first one (closer to the triplet), or the second (farther from the triplet)?
Thanks

Re: D16Z6 Timing Belt questions
Well, after double-checking the belt guides, everything was installed correctly. I was also able to find the correct timing mark on the crank pulley. Still, though, for the life of me, I cannot get the pulley to sit flush against the crank snout. For some reason, the pulley doesn't go in far enough. Is it supposed to sit like that, or are the groove where the crank bolt washer contacts the pulley, and the front of the crank snout supposed to lign up perfectly? (like a good noob, I didn't pay attention when I removed the crank pulley).
Right now, it looks kinda like this (from a side view).
| Crank pulley (ENGINE ====>)
|

. |
. |End of crank snout (Where the bolt goes in)

Re: D16Z6 Timing Belt questions
First post says key does not sit flush your last post says pulley, the key should not be out past the pulley so washer should sit flush with pulley.
Pulley might not sit flush with crank just check again that you have put things together according to instructions you are following then put bolt in.
Sounds like you have things right and like it might be first time jitters.
Good luck with it all.

Yeah, my bad. The key is not an issue at all. Hopefully these pic's will show what I'm talking about. See how the pulley does not go in far enough on the shaft? There's a little gap between the front of the crank snout and the edge of the pulley.

Whoa, phew!! That's really comforting to hear. I guess I was just freaking out about blowing up my engine. Thank you for your time, gentlemen.

Re: D16Z6 Timing Belt questions
haha!! If all fails, bust out the big hammer!! Believe me, I've already tried it, but it still does not budge. That's as far back as the pulley will slide. I think I'll just put everything back together and test-fire it. (If the engine blows up, I'll have a real excuse to do a swap).
