d16z6 overheating problem
just as the topic says, my d16 is overheating and i think i have a clue to what it could be, i just need some solid facts. i changed the thermostat and put in a oem honda one but before that, i flushed the whole coolant system and refilled it. i even cleaned out the resevoir and filled that up. now the problem is that it overheats whenever its idling for awhile like at a long stop light or traffic but when im on the move again, the temperature guage goes down to normal just below the halfway point. a perfect example is traffic, it will overheat in traffic but when i start moving again, it wont overheat. i dont get it, is this a sign of a bad head gasket? thanks in advance

Check to make sure the radiator fan is working. I have had several EGs with fan relay problems lately. It seems that the contacts in the fuse box are losing tension and the fan operation becomes intermittent.

you could also jump the fan to see if it comes on...if it comes on then the fan is good obviously, then you could check that relay. if those are all good, it could be the coolant temp sensor on the thermostat housing. i've had 3 go bad on my y8 in the pass 8 years. good luck

On which car? I've never seen that on a Civic.

i checked around the headgasket area and no signs of leaks, i check under my car and no leaks at all. i haven't checked the waterpump because its covered. the air has been bleeded when i flushed the coolant out and im sure the t-stat is functioning fine because it opens up and my temp stays fine until im at a stop for a long while. the fan seems to work, ive seen it go on a couple time. when exactly is it suppose to go on? can anyone let me in on how to jump the fan to see if it comes on?

you know, i see lots of "my car overheats" threads on H-T, but i never see one thing, the thing that was wrong on my car.
my car was overheating, i did the prerequisite change the thermostat, flushed the system, new antifreeze/water, and it would still overheat when i would stop at a light, or whatever.
yes, i also checked the fan, and it was working properly.
but, at over 200,000 miles, my RADIATOR was toast. yes, it was pretty trashed. where the radiator is directly seen from the front bumper, all the fins were smashed over. when i tried to open them back up, it was a lost cause, as i could then see that they were all seperating from the passages that the coolant runs through.
so, i changed my radiator. fixed everything. my temp gauge NEVER goes up over half now, where as before it would go all the way to the red.
moral of the story: check how smashed your radiator is from rocks and bugs. face it, hondas are driven a lot, and with tons of miles of rocks, sticks, birds, or whatever else jumps up at your radiator, it might be so smashed up that air can't flow through it any more. and without air, your coolant isn't going to cool much.
(also, i got a fluidyne radiator, as it was the same price as a new radiator from honda)

dude im thinking that its your water pump. mines started to go out on me when i was out of town. luckily my sisters boyfriends uncles helped me out. they completely took out the thermostat and let the coolant flow freely. if it over heats again, its most likely the waterpump. mines started to overheat on the way home, even on the freeway at night. didnt quite make it home but i got it fixed now. plus im guessing if it was the head gasket, there would be white smoke coming out at wot. just my 2 cents
