Hate to beat up a old thread but need some input. I bought a jdm engine that turned out to be a y5 vtec e & put in my 97 civic ex after the y8 gave out. Its a 5 speed & right now im running the y8 p2p ecu, intake, header, and all sensor with no egr because the y8 didnt have them on the intake. Car idles funny so what needs to be done to make this thing perform correctly?

Your stock Y8 harness will work on the Y5

buy a...

obd2a to obd1 Jumper - 50$
92-95 Civic Ex P28 - $100
Send Ecu to Phearable.net for tune - $80

if you jump it to obd1 you'll bypass O2 sensors, Egr valve, etc.

I contacted this place & they told me i would be wasting my money that a chipped obd1 ecu wouldnt solve my problems.

Kind of smells like the car runs rich sometimes & the O2 sensor in the header has a white tint to it. The person i talked to said a obd1 ecu wouldnt fix the iacv malfunction im having but honestly i dont know whats causing it. I checked it with a multimeter & the TPS while i was at it. I noticed someone else said map sensor but im not throwing a code for that.

the y5 tied to an EX 5 speed would be a little quicker than a y8. still your not talking about much but you can still have the mpg savings and the off the line feel.

I have both but need a car to put them in. I'm picky wanting a '98 ex

trying to bring back some attention to this thread; did you ever fix your issue? im having the same problem. 99 ex, previous owner swapped y8 for a y5. i was unaware until after purchase, has been throwing knock sensor CEL since ive had it. So I'm thinking it is a knock sensor, because I've been told that the y8 has two sensors, and the y5 has 1. So i plan on hooking up a knock sensor to the plug that is dangling, and putting it on a spot, near the engine that is warm and vibrates so the sensor feels like it should as if it were in the engine. I already tried a new iacv, and that wasnt the issue. my problem only happens when it is already warm, and the ecu is changing the timing to make it smell like its really rich, hesitate upon giving the car gas, idle really high (1700ish rpm) and jerk while driving in gear.
Sorry for the book, but this has been bugging me for a few months now. Any help would be awesome. Doing the sensor thing tomorrow and going to get my cel reset

Not really worth it. Just change the transmission or swap to a B series.

can I get some clarification can you use a D16y8 ecu for a D16y5 motor swap

Im also doing a motor swap with a D16y5 motor getting all wire harness and distributor for the Vtec but I couldn’t find a d16y5 ecu can you use a d16y8 ecu for the motor
