D16y7 Won't Start-Has spark,fuel and Correct Timing
A friend threw a rod in his '97 DX. I swapped in a '98 y7. The motor was purchased used threw Advanced AutoParts.
Right now the engine is getting spark and fuel.
For timing, the dist. rotor is at #1, Cam gear at UP, and Single white marking on crank at the notch. So timing should be A-OK.
Had battery starter hooked to battery to make sure it was fully juiced (volt tested at 12.5v before trying that).
Changed all the plugs.
Dist order starting at top left 1 - below that 2 - top right 3 -bottom right 4
It just turns over and over.
I have never had a problem like this before. We've check every ground wire, plug , and connector, all is tight and good.
I've seen a few posts like this when I searched, but none of them ever came up with a answer really... least the ones I found.
Any ideas? I've only worked on 92-95/OBDI cars. Didnt know if something odd on this I am overlooking.

I think the thermo ground is good if his getting spark and fuel (although double check it though). Is there any codes? Also what is the motor doing exactly when its turning over? Any burping, signs of struggling, whinning sounds? Did you do a compression test? Check the valve adjustments if you havent already.

Yes the thermo ground is there and making good connection.
Havn't done a compression test.
When it's turning over, hear a slight whine every time the starter fires. Nothing out of the ordinary though. The harness, starter, and dist. are from the original engine, not the replacement.

Had to go double check- still no codes either.
We are totally stumped.

check the little rectangular module inside the distributor that the rotor wheel attaches to, if thats bulged its blown and the car wont turn over

Everything seems OK.
It seems like the timing is off (just from a previous experience), but the crank/cam markings just seem to line up ok.

I am replying to see if you have determined the nature of the problem with you D16Y7 or is it still persistent. If you have determined the problem, please inform me of how you resolved the problem because I am having the same problem with my 97 Honda Civic D16Y7 as well.
