d15b7-mini-me vs. d16z6 D-SERIES!
to the mods, not sure where this would go, but it seems like EG+ CIVIC forum rocks!... move if necessary..
well i'm hoping this thread becomes mainly tech.... both motors are sohc vtec, stock (or as stock as possible)...
but of course the d15mini me setup will vary, lets say with the z6head and manifold (y8 discussion later)... which motor seems to be the best of choice?
mini me cr is approx 10.1, with the d16z6 at approx 9.1
which motor is overall better, in terms of strength/reliability? the rods on the d15 are known not to be the best, yet it does have a pretty good r/s ratio... i've also heard of cooling problems with it...then again, i could just buy a d16 and throw it in, but where would be the fun? i'm really split on it, as d16's seem to go for more expensive nowadays, and a d15mini me can be had for a little bit cheaper.....
any one of these motors will be going into my 92 dx hatchie and i'm definitely interested in what everybody has to say
oh yeah, anybody have these motors for cheap? ha! even one blown, i'll take it, just lookin to gain experience on... thanks all!

u could also go with the 1.5 jdm sohc vtec motor which puts out pretty much the same power as the z6 and an lsd to boot. that would retain your reliability since it is a stock honda motor not a hybrid mini-me.

stick the head on the b7 and drive it around while you collect the parts to build a high compression d16

i'm going mini me with my d15b7...and the CR will be approx 11:1 with a y8 head gasket...i picked up a p28 and z6 head for about $300 total, and then it will be another 200 for head gasket, plug wires, plugs, water pump, timing belt, etc...i am going to be doing the swap next week and there will be a large tech post in this forum about how it went...but according to the site below the mini me with y8 gasket will yield 135 HP and an 11:1 CR...i am hoping for high 15's with this setup...also you can add zc pistons and raise the compression another half point...so my vote will go for the mini me because i can replace key components (head gasket/timing belt/plug wires), gain 10 HP, and save a few hundred bucks

stick with the d16z6 i went the mini me d15b7 route and the car wasn't that much faster and i threw a rod. With the d16 i'm running a 15.5 and its more reliable.

do you know why you threw a rod? i am interested to know because as i said, i will be doing this swap next week and i want to try and eliminate as many future problems as i can

d15b7 z6 head ran perfectly fine for 3 years for daily driver, so i think its pretty reliable ....now its boosted at 5lbs 2 weeks so far so good

high compression, no tuning, detonation... the list continues. Do it right and it will last. Do it shitty and it will be shitty. Its the same idea with the B20vtec and LSvtecs. Do it right the first time.

yeah...and BTW i did my mini-me so you can read up on it by clicking the link in the sig. and you were right from the start, mini-me compression is 10.1:1 with a d16y8 head gasket

slap the y8 head on the b7 and use a z6 head on the d16. the z6 will flow better.
i just put a y8 head on my b7 over the weekend as a temp till i get time to finish my other motor. it gives a 10.5:1 cr and i swear with 2 deg cam retard the damn thing pulls to 8400 (8700 indicated on the tach). granted i have a lightend flywheel and **** and UR pulley, but it shouldnt make that much of a difference.
its amazing how bad the dx gearing is, i pulled 75 mph in 2nd gear and probably could have gotten a little more.

if you do the mini-me make sure you swap the intake manifold as well. Get the p28 to run your vtec, it will pull better than the rpm activated switch. y8 head works best with the d15b7.

I always see people making mini-me's out of the B7. Is it possible to do the Z6/Y8 head swap onto a D15B8 (CX motor)?
Isn't the block the same as the B7, but with an 8 valve head?

I never even thought about that. I was planning on swapping a B7 head onto the B8 block in my hatch just to get her running, and that never even crossed my mind.
