Cracked Exhaust manifold, common problem?
So I just found out I had a cracked exhaust manifold on my 97 dx civic. I have never messed with it so I wonder, is this a common problem? It is still the stock unit that came with the car so I wonder, what can cause this?
No, I have never wet the manifold with cold water when the mani was hot.

Yeah - it does happen. I don't want to say its 'common' - but it does happen.
You may be able to get it repaired free from the dealer - what kinda mileage you have?

Actually I don't want to get a header cause of the whole cat converter thing, and also cause I might do a swap later on down the road.

Was there some sort of recall on them? Cause I no longer have the warranty.

Cat's are covered under a federal warranty, from what I remember. What I don't remember is if it was 75k, 80k, 90k, or 100k (but I'm pretty sure it wasn't past 100k).
Can't hurt to try....

the dealership won't cover it, it has too many miles. Manifolds covered 8 years, or 80k miles.
O, and the cat, is also only covered for 8 years, or 80k miles.

Yeash but it's the manifold that's cracked, not the cat itself.

I kinda had a feeling about that, especially with my luck.

Exahust manifolds and headers tend to crack over time. Stock headers are less prone to it, but still will, obviously since yours did.
The federal warranty on cats is 7yr/80k miles, if its not 80k, then its as low as 70k. I had mine changed by Honda as I thru a CEL for cat efficiency before the warranty ran out on my civic.

Thanks Roger, I already posted a WTB ad in the classifieds, hopefully I can get one at a good price.

I know because I sell Acuras and explain this in every delivery I do. The manifold is in NO WAY covered by this warranty. The reason why this is done is because the catalyzt has a life of 10-15 years, so if it malfunctions in that time there was a flaw in initial production. A dealer will not fix your manifold for you, well at least for free they wont. <TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by Marauder »</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">Exahust manifolds and headers tend to crack over time. Actually the dealership will cover the manifold if the cat is connected to it. On 96 and 97 models except Passports, there is an emissions extension to i think 150,000 miles. I would go to the dealership and have them replace it.

Re: Cracked Exhaust manifold, common problem? (HondaFanatic708)
Hey sport, thanks for your input, but there's a recall on those manifolds. I know because, I have the recall printed out in my folder, in my tool box. Next time, read a persons signature before doubting what they know. I've done these as recalls. Manifold-Honda warranty 8 year, 80k miles. Catalytic converter-Federal 8 years, 80k miles. Thanks though.
But as mentioned above if you get a cool dealership, they'll cover it to any mileage. It's called goodwilling an item.

The fact of the extension is true however, I think it may include 98 as well but I'm not 100%. You know why the Passport isn't included?

I got a letter from honda a long time ago about the emmsion extensions warranty on "certain" model, my 97 hx was included. Here is a thread I posted a long time ago https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=698412 as for your question about the exhaust manifolds cracking I have heard that quite a few hx's that have cracked. As I'm 146,000 miles right now and the warranty is about out I'm thinking about scheduling an appointment to get mine checked out.

Yes, you can hear it inside the car too! Personal Experice.
I think this cracked hearder thing is becoming more and more common, even more among D16y7's.
