Default clutch master cylinder is not bleeding right.

I had to change my clutch master cylinder due to a leak causing lack of pressure at the cylinder. I installed a new cylinder that I purchased at auto zone. I have connected lines all back and cylinder hooked up to clutch pedal. Well now when I compress the clutch it will go down with no resistance and sit at the bottom, not trying to flex back up to normal possision at all. The rod from the cylinder that gets connected to the clutch pedal can be compressed with no force acting on it to push the clutch back up. People say bleed the clutch , but I'm worried about the cylinder bring damaged cause I can even take the old master cylinder and compress the same rod in and it will have force to push it back out, even without it being connected to anything. Help!!

That's normal. You'll need to bleed the clutch to get the pedal to return on it's own. I've seen it take close to an hour to bleed a completely dry system, usually they aren't that bad. Fill the resoirvoir, replace cap, with the bleeder closed pump the pedal half a dozen times, hold it down, have an assistant crack the bleeder, close bleeder, pump again, repeat till the fluid comes out with no bubbles and you have a firm pedal. When you start it's easiest to pump the pedal by hand so you can pull it back. Once it starts returning on it's own you can pump it with your foot.
