Default civic A/C Compressor

Yesterday i was putting some freon in my car to charge up my A/C, as soon as the bottle ran out the A/C compressor clutch turned on.... right away i noticed that the clutch turned off and under the compressor it started to leak a lot of fluid and my freon pressure went down... my question is, on the side of the compressor their is a small shield, i took it off and saw this rubber plug hanging which is where everything came out of.. i plugged it back in...i wanted to know what is that rubber plug for, and was everything that squirted out oil or freon ? my car is a 93 Civic Eg dx, 1.5
