problem with 96 ek gas meter in cluster
hey everyone, im having a wierd problem with my fuel gauge on my cluster. if i drive it hard and hit vtec, then the gas will go straight down(i can literally see it move) but when i start driving it normal the gas will go up. also if wen i fill up, if i put in like $30 then the meter will go all the way up to full, but its not all the way full. it takes about 40-44 dollars to fill my tank up. is this the cluster itself or a problem with the gas tank.. idk i just want to know whats wrong haha-vin

with these older civics the way they measure the gas level is on a float, i know that my eg coupe is, so every time i go around an on/off ramp to the highway or go up hill/downhill the gas gauge moves up or down but then settles back, maybe ts not vtech in general but acceleration and the boating effect caused by hard acceleration that is making the gauge fluctuate. as for the gas pumps and them not filling your car all the way up, i had a 99 protoge and it had a 50 liter tank and deady empty the pumps would shut off at about 40 liters, i could then slowly fill up about 8-9 more liters, gas pumps have safeties built into them as to not overflow tanks and spill gas on the ground or car, basically as you reach the last few liters or gallon, the gas tank nozzle backs up slightly and causes the pump to click off, just fill slowly after that point.

My '99 civic does that too, pain in the *** sometimes cause you can't take the gauge at face value. Is there a way to swap out the fuel level sensor with a more accurate one?

It's really hard to assess whether you have a problem or not. You speak in dollars to fill tank rather than gallons.

i noticed just changing to my crv cluster my gas gauge does not fluctuate as much as it did with the stock civic gauge cluster. those clusters are just poor for measuring gas.

it has an 11.9 gallon tank and gas is like $4.00 here on longisland so thats like 44 dollars to fill up my tank. but even if i put the 30 dollars in that would be around 7-8 gallons, it still reads its completeley full. i guess just keep fillinf up?

at damn near empty, i could only get about 10-10.5 gallons. you should never overflow your tank. the extra space is reserved for vapor and expansion of the gasoline from heat.

I'm sure the behavior is similar for EK's as EG's since we both have the float style sender. The level sender is pretty worthless in my EG and in trying to find something better I may have found something that may bolt right in EK's and give more accurate readings. Here is a picture and a ballpark price:

They can be ordered with a bend in them from the manufacturer and one of the output options appears to be ohms in a range pretty close to what I find in my EG service manual. Here is the company that makes them:

EG's have a twist in mount instead of the 5 bolts like the EK's so I'm not sure how to get one in there easily. Someone with an EK should go for it

its normal for these older civics...i have a 95 coupe and when i turn right it goes down...wen i go left it goes up. and it'll move under hard acceleration or braking and sometimes going up or down a hill. it always settles back
