What are you goals with this? Just plain daily driving or some occasional spirited driving? I would recommend you swap to a GSR transmission because the gear ratios are fitted for a Vtec engine which is shorter ratios than the LS. B16 transmission I would say is way too short like around 60mph at 4k rpm. The best for fuel economy on a Vtec engine would be a GSR transmission with a LS 5th gear.

If you are planning on swapping blocks, I would go B20, B18c1(GSR), or B18c5(Type R). B20 for having the most torque but not high revving. B20s or B20vtec builds is best mated with LS transmission because B20 blocks don't like being revved higher than 7k? Correct me if I'm wrong.

Then if you have money to throw down and you love high revving engines, I would say B16b(EK9). They can rev up to 9k stock but 1.6liters will never have much torque compared to 1.8 or 2.0s.

b18c1 block, or type r block, a little more torque and if you have extra cash upgrade the internals..for tranny i say b16 tranny with ls 5th..

I would suggest a b20 with gsr tranny:
Cheapest, U can use unleaded gas, and the torque on the motor helps when you have to deliver pizzas in 30 mins or less. Also since u already have a b16 motor and your block might be going bad, you can use your head to make a b20vtec down the road.

b16 motor needs a b16 tranny plain and simple!

gs-R will be an improvement over your Ls tranny, but if you have to buy another tranny and do all this work... why not go for the best option.

I have had many many set-ups : D's,B's,H's,J's,K's,F's etc....

If you plan on going with a larger bottom end...why not consider boost and keep it all b16?

If you do plan on keeping it n/a I would go Ls bottom end or a type-R.
I do not like stock b20 or gs-R bottom ends. Just my 0.02.

FYI my last boosted set-up took off 1 full second in the 1/4 mile switching from a gs-R lsd to a b16lsd. Motor was a very tired 1989 1st gen b16a

you can get different final drives. ls or gsr.
unless you've done builds before i wouldn't do b20. its nice for the torque but making a nonvtec motor vtec can be a pain.

if anything get a gsr bottom end and call it a day.
or turbo and keep your current setup.

Go with a GS-R block and ur B16 head with either a B16 or GS-R tranny. Since you didnt mention really racing ur car or anything at all like that id honestly go with what you can get the best deal on price wise. I do have a J4D LSD tranny right now on my B16 thats turbod, its awsome for driving around town, but on the freeway its AWFUL. I cruise at 80MPH at 4700RPMs. Sooo a B16 or GS-R tranny would be great with an LS 5th.

Personally, if you are willing to take the patience to do it, run a gsr 4th, and an ls 5th.

Dont get me wrong, itll do great on the freeway, just cruising at pretty high RPMs on the freeway. Speed limits here are 75 if they were say 65 it wouldnt be too bad.

I know this is a old thread but for the sake of info/misinfo...NO b16 tranny is a 4krpm at 60,that's nonsense. My LSD second gen SiR b16 tranny is at about 4200rpm at 80mph (my cruising speed. I get 30mpg combined (over the course of 10 gas tanks so it's good numbers) running that high of an rpm.Yea it's a little annoying, yes you could save mpg and maybe engine wear with a Ls 5th.But a NA b16 needs a b16 tranny to shine.

Also if you just feather the gas at 4K+ you maintain speed and it's not that loud/ obnoxious.
