b16 dies after clutch pressed
so it is winter here, about -15c average.
car is a 1998 ej6
b16a gen2 sir
virgin p72 ecu (been meaning to switch but im poor)
car starts then dies,
i turn over once more, car starts and idles, can idle adn rev forever, i start moving and clutch to shift gears and it dies instantly, even if i rev it dies.
after i try and start it seems like it is getting zero power
is this a battery and or alternator problem??
also, my cel is not going on, so im assuming that is but i have a sneaky feeling my cel light is gone or disabled. how can i check to make sure the cel would come on is say a sensor failed??

The fastest check for CEL light I know of is to turn the key to the on position, most all the dash lights light up including the CEL. The CEL should come on for a couple of seconds then shut off and you should hear the fuel pump priming the system.
If you don't see the CEL come on at all, then either the light is burned out or somehow the thing is disabled.

hmmm ill double check that and report back. never really looked to see.
kinda worried, i hate running the p72, vtec cracking at 4500 and running rich. getting frustrating to be honest.

Running rish is also bad, causes cylinder wash which causes searious wear issues. Washes the oil off the walls which in turn cause the rings to smooth out the walls which in turn means less oil can stick to the walls etc etc, viscious cycle.

Re: b16 dies after clutch pressed
i could ghetto my ignition timing but... ya no.
ive been swapping oil every 4000 km. right now (ya it is probably over kill but i dont wanna hurt the b16) mobil 1 full synthetic.
rather rich then lean if i gotta look at it in a positive way.
still annoying as frik. and now the car dies when i clutch in so... im praying that is the battery and or alternator and not something serious

Re: b16 dies after clutch pressed
well, i can confirm that the cel light does NOT turn on in the ignition acc. position. ripped out the guage cluster, checking the light. i had a look at the wires they seem preety stock. no cuts or after factory tape or heat shrink that i can see. hoping for a bulb, but i gotta find an ej6 guage cluster diagram first

Re: b16 dies after clutch pressed
wire was cut.... way back behind the dash.
throwing a few codes. looks like when i bought it guy went to some serious trouble to hide the fact the civic was running a cel.
sure it has to do with it being a p72 on the b16 in general si 1 problem fixed technically. 1 to go.

Re: b16 dies after clutch pressed
You might have a bad clutch release (throwout) bearing. This doesn't seem like an electronic problem. Why would the ECU care if the clutch is in for this particular case?
A P72 will run a B16 just fine at idle and "normal" driving. VTEC will be at 4400RPM, butterflies will try to open at 5800RPM, and fuel curve is different. None of which would kill the car the moment you push in the clutch.
