Default ATTN - techs. Wheel Wobble

Just picked up a '98 Civic EX coupe. The rear passenger side wheel has a wobble that is apparently noticable while the car is moving, but I don't feel it while driving. I picked the car up off a buddy of mine who knows absolutely nothing about cars or fixing them, and he said that his mechanic told him that he needed a tirod . I didn't remember that tirods only apply to the front of the vehicle until after i bought the car.

Anybody know what could be going on here? It's not the hubcap because their isn't one on there, it's clearly the wheel. I jacked the car up and the wheel doesn't wobble around and everything feels tight, but when I'm driving people tell me the wheel is all over the place and looks like it's going to fall off.

I searched but I couldn't find anything revelent to this, any help in here before I spend money I don't have at a mechanic would be apreciated.

I would suspect the wheel bearing.

Or, a bent wheel.

Have you had somebody else drive it so you could see it wobble? There's only three things that could make the wheel wobble or atleast appear to wobble:

1) bent wheel
2) loose lug nuts
3) bad wheel bearing

Don't take it to a mechanic. Just buy a 96-00 ex rear trailing arm off of craigslist for $30 and swap it.

you should just check your wheel.

-wheel weights are off
-bad tires?
-messed up axles?
.. etc

this sounds very unssafe..

Well none of this sounds very expensive. I had a wheel bearing go bad once on the front but the wheel would wobble when I jacked it up, this time the wheel doesn't wobble when jacked up as if there isn't anything wrong. I'll just try swapping it with another wheel and seeing if it could just be a bent wheel.

Rear bearings can be kind of spendy becuase you have to replace the whole hub.

On the bright side, they aren't that hard to change.

just jack it up and look at it for yourself before spending any money. If you think its a wheel, switch it with one of the other three. If it goes away. Viola!!! Its your wheel. If it doesn't go away then you need to replace the hub assembly.

Jack it up and spin the wheel. You will definately hear it if it's a bearing.
