I know 3rd gear grinds have been brought up several times in the past, but I want my own thread. I just test drove a 94 ex (d16z6). 3rd gear grinds ONLY if you shift quick (but I'm not talking about mashing). It goes in fine with a nice smooth normal shift. The shifter also feels a little sloppy going in to 3rd. I'm sure everybody's going to tell me it's the syncro. WILL GM SYNCROMESH FM FIX MY PROBLEM? j/k How much is it going to cost me to replace the syncros?

This is not a repair shop. Want a repair quote? Call a shop. If you lived by me and wanted me to do it, $200 is what I would charge + you supply me with the synchros.

Where do I find syncros? Do I have to get entire transmissions or can I call around and have something pieced together?

It does sound like synchros. GM synchromesh will only mask the problem. You can buy a new synchro set from Honda, but I would imagine buying that and putting it in would cost as much if not more than a new (used) tranny. Of course then you run the risk of the next tranny having some issues.

d16 trannys are a dime a dozen. do a search on here and you can score one for 200 maybe 300 bucks if your lucky. you get the syncros for honda for pretty cheap, its the labor cost if your not a do it yourselfer that will hurt you, but chances are if you don't know what syncros are then the labor for putting in the new tranny would be the same. bring it to a shop and let them do it.

you can't just go to honda and buy a synchro, they only sell the whole gearset and it's between 200-300 bucks and that just helps that gear. http://www.gear-speed.com has carbon synchros $225 for the set for D series trans. That's the option I'm going to go with. You feel like driving down to MD we can have it done in a day. Labor cost is probably about $400 I'm guessing here depending on how many labor hours the book says but probably about 10. Should only take about 3 hours to do it realistically. We just did my roommates del sol and we can have it out and on the table in 25 minutes now.

How about I drive down, help with the project and get charged clock time instead of that stupid *** book bs. That I might be down for.

I was really just kidding (j/k) about the syncromesh. I know it won't fix it. I'm going to use it anyway until I get my hands on another tranny or whatever I'm going to do.

and uh...sorry if you feel im treating you like a noob, but hey that could be it, i thought my tranny was fucked when i'd shift to 3rd and it was grinding then i changed the way i shifted and now it works perfectly

There is a difference between shifting fast and shifting like an *** clown. If the teeth on the synchro are in good shape as they should be then shifting fast should NOT cause any problems.

I've been driving stick for 9 years. I've been driving my Civic for 2 including track events and many autox's. I know how to shift fast and I can even do it without mashing the gears. There should be no grinding when shifting regardless of shift speed. How did you change your shifting? Slow it down? On a track or autox course slow shifting is NOT an option. But I thank you for your input and suggest you replace yours as well.

our labor rate is $50/hr which is almost half the price of any dealership it wouldn't realy be worth it to only charge actual labor time but depending on what the book says we might be able to work out a deal. As for helping, not to be rude in anyway but you'd probably just get in our way. Unfortunately more than two people working in an engine bay doesn't work out to good.
