Does the compressor spin freely? Reach down by hand and turn the FRONT of it counter-clockwise. Not the pulley, but the clutch on the end of it. If it turns realtively smoothly, the compressor is good. Next check with the car running & AC on see if it engages & the condenser fan comes on.
If you didn't have the compressor on & motor running previously it won't take a charge. It also helps if you prop the throttle body open (usually using feeler gauges) to get about 1500 RPM's.
Are you using a/c gauges? Or a just a can of freon with attatchment?

Re: ? about car not takng ac charge
I had similar trouble with a DC4 I had, my compressor wasn't coming on. I made sure the fuse was good then hooked up my charge kit and jumped 12v to the single wire going in to the compressor (which engaged the compressor). It took the charge and worked wonderfully.
