Default 99 Si Overheating issue- New WP, tstat, hoses, etc...

Well after spending about an hour on this board reading up it looks to be a common problem. I am now leaning towards air in my system but figured I would post up. Over the weekend I bought a 99 Si coupe with 255K on the clock. Car runs great and he recently did a full tune up and had the waterpump, timing belt, hoses, all other belts, etc... replaced. Here is the odd part. I commuter 35 miles each way daily. Around town, normal freeway driving, and in the mornings on my way to work the car is perfect. On my way home when it is about 80+ degrees out and I am in traffic the car overheats fast.

If I run the heater it will immediatey start dropping. In these same temps, if I get off the freeway and take back roads through lights and town it is fine. When on the freeway though it will overheat. I just dont get it. When it starts to get hot it runs like a dog to. Any thoughts?

And yes I think it is funny in 10 years as a member this is my first post. LOL

Air in system. Rule that out first.
I also don't see where you actually checked or replaced anything coolant related.

Sorry Marc let me clarify. On 6/18 the waterpump, tstat, and upper/lower hoses were replaced. The invoice also shows new coolant which would be expected. LOL Im thinking it has to be air just odd how its fine one moment and not the other?

Just saw the coolant related stuff in your thread title.
Just try bleeding. Takes no more than a half an hour.

To help out a fellow Tracy resident... Also check that the replaced components of the cooling system are not leaking.

100+ degree weather sucks..

Can we assume that coolant in the reservoir is at the proper level?

When the engine is cool, remove the radiator cap to see whether the coolant level is low.

Was an OEM T-stat installed?

If the problem continues after properly bleeding the cooling system, then consider replacing the radiator.

Yes it indeed sucks. I am now confident it is air in the system. I started my commute home and was fine. Once I hit bumper to bumper action it was overheating. I turned off the AC and put the heater on. Drive home sucked but car was fine which is important. Now to find some time to fix the issue. This is a clean Si with a dc header, Greddy catback, new tires, system, and all the work done under the hood. Once my tranny comes back for my Nissan I am going to ask $4000 which is a steal in this area, but I cant sell it like this it would not be cool. Honestly someone would test drive it and could drive it back to LA and never know until they hit serious traffic. Car doesn't leak a drop and is a clean title, whatever the issue it will be fixed. Radiator as replaced about 2 years ago.

It sure does. LLast friday on the way home I took all back roads to keep the car moving and it still got hot. Saturday afternoon while driving it back to my cousins house (I bought it from him, hes taking it back to shop that did all the work) in 100 degree weather with NO traffic on the freeway it got hot. I only needed the car for a few days so once the repair and I get it back, for sale signs it is. LOL
