D16Y7 (manual) upgrade to D16Y8 from Automatic
So I picked up a '99 Civic DX hatchback with a blown D16Y7 engine (with manual trans) for next to nothing. Now its time to locate a new engine; from what I have read the D16Y7 and D16Y8 motors are almost interchangeable with each other. But I haven't come up with any clear answers on a couple things, mainly confusing me.
I know the '99 Civic is OBD2B, but uses a steel key. Can I use a OBD2A engine with a OBD2B ECU?
I have a chance to pick up a D16Y8 out of an Automatic Civic for a case of beer... what is needed for me to drop it it into my Civic? I know that I'll need to locate a manual ECU.
For now, I plan on using my -Y7 trans (S40).
I also have AC & Power Steering and would like to keep these functional.

Re: '99 D16Y7 to D16Y8
Drop in the obd2a y8 with the obd2b y8 engine harness (if available), plug in 99-00 5 speed ecu, drive.
You can use your obd2b Y7 engine harness, but you will have to repin the iacv, run your own knock sensor wire, run your own VTEC wiring, and I think that may be it. Its been a few years since I have done this so I may be off a step or 2.

If you don't care if VTEC works just swap out the block/head assembly, use all the controls etc that came with the non-VTEC car. That would be a pure drop-in and entirely suitable for daily driving. You can build out the rest later.
If you have access to the whole parts car take off the manifold and converter upgrade your car to EX style exhaust.

Re: '99 D16Y7 to D16Y8
awesome... that so simple. Glad to hear there is no differences between the OBD2A/OBD2B motors, and no difference between the Auto and Manual blocks.
Right now I just have a '97 D16Y8 motor (top to bottom) out of an Auto.
So it looks like I'll be running the -Y7 ECU & Harness with the -Y8 Engine for a little while.
