Default 97 Civic Hx engine questions

Hello everyone! I have searched online and cant find to many links that talk about HX motors
But my head gasket on my 1997 civic with about 260,00 miles has blown.

My question is, should i be looking for an exact HX engine to replace mine with (d16y5) since I heard they are better than the other engines that come in the civics like the ex, lx, model etc.(for gas purposes not power)
Or should I be find getting another D series engine like a d16y8 or something?

I preferably would like to stick with D series, I dont want a B series swap or anything crazy this is for a daily driver and work

and another side note question, after swapping engines, would it be best to also swap the 5 speed transmission out with the engine, or would it still be ok ? (there arent any problems with the tranny from what i know, just asking since the engine will be newer than the tranny im assuming)

thank you guys in advance!

Let me ask you, how is the y5 better than any other d-series?

They y5 might be harder to find, and if you find one its probably not in a good condition to run.

why would you say they wouldnt be in a good condition to run?

so should i just search for like a y8 or something? since there are obviously way more of those to buy?
also, would i have to get a whole different cpu for my car since the hx has different settings on the engines from what i read?

I would just have the cylinder head rebuilt and keep it a y5

I think what he was saying is that if you are buying some one else's used engine there is no guarantee their old engine is any better than your old engine.

So I would rebuild your old motor

I prefer the d16y5, I didn't buy a 96 honda civic to be a screaming 120whp race car. I have a biased opinion though, I've only owned 5 of them

I tell you what, pick up the 1st y5 you find, NO QUESTIONS ASKED. Swap it in and tell me how it drives.

repair the gasket issue- machine the head, etc. pick up another y5, rebuild it, and install at your own pace.

I also have a question If anyone can help, I have a 98 civic ex with no y8 so I put in a d16y5. I have the Ecu but I'm using the ex harness . Will this work,I still have the o2 sensors from the ex as well, if it does work is there a diagram or something that can show me where all the wires plug in to the sensor on these harnesses and engine

There are a lot of parts different between a HX and a DX/LX/EX. It would be better to sell the Y5 to someone who has an HX and swap in an engine that better matches what you have.
