Icon2 92 Civic Sedan 5spd *weird noise*

i just bought a 92 civic sedan with a manual 5spd, 121,xxx miles. Its been a while since i drive a stick so im a little confused. its making a rattling sort of noise when the clutch pedal is not pressed, as soon as i step on the clutch it stops. i remember something about a throwout bearing?? am i thinking in the right direction? also it sounds like something is grating when im accelerating in gear. if i dont accelerate, even if its moving, it doesnt make the noise. could it be its missing gear oil? clutch/flywheel? i dont think its the flywheel because it would have trouble starting right? this car was sitting since January 07 so maybe it just needs to be driven? i bought it on friday for $800 so i know ima have to invest some $$ in it. As soon as i got it titled and registered yesterday i dropped the tank and cleaned it out and added like 6 gal of premium gas and it started right up and idled great. a/c and heat work great too.

edit: heres a clip of the noise. video is dark but u can hear the sound. this is inside the car too. im in the drivers seat.
UPDATE: 2/16/09 Finally bought flywheel and clutch. check post #37 for details and pics.

on sunday 12/28 i plan on doing: ngk plugs and wires, oil and oil filter, drain and fill gear oil, air filter, fuel filter, and goodyear gator belts. anything else i should do now?

idk about rattling, but i know my trans makes a whining noise with ur foot off the clutch pedal, but once u press it in, it goes away. that would be the input shaft bearing. try and post a video up

yes thats how it happens but its not a whining, its definitely a rattling sound. i thought it was the engine knocking thats how loud it is! but as soon as i press the clutch in it stops 100%.

*ill put up a video after xmas. well probably tommorow cause we do all our xmas stuff today at midnight.

pilot bearing probably. do a clutch swap and you'll find out real quick.

im pretty sure if the noise occurs when the clutch pedal is depressed and not engaged, you most likely need a new throwout bearing...

thats what i was thinkn too but its a real loud rattling, like real loud. and when im accelerating the scraping noise? even if its moving at any speed but not accelerating it doesnt make the scraping noise. i would post a video today but i took out the batt cause it was bad and cracked. is the throwout bearing something i can changeout or is it easier to get another tranny? especially since im goint to be doing a stage 2 and light flywheel soon.

any chance it could be axle related? they dont click when i turn tho...
where can i get a 92 civic fsm? i know a site but its only nissan/infiniti fsms

i think the scraping noise is something with my flywheel/clutch which im replacing in january.... but the rattling was way too loud to be the throw out bearing and my mngr told me to check the shift linkage and sure enough they are loose as hell!! i already bought my stuff for my tune up tonight so tommorow ill tune it up and fix the linkage. ill video a b4 and after so ya can hear the sounds tho.

You're no n00b! I would buy a replacement clutch off of ebay. You can get an OEM EXEDY Replacement Kit for around 101 bucks shipped. It comes with clutch disk, pressure plate, and throwout bearing. The OEM clutch that comes with your car from the dealer was an Exedy...

2 Qs. 1. is a release bearing the same thing as a throwout bearing? cause thats what some kits list and dont mention a throwout bearing.
2. should i go ahead and throw in a light weight flywheel if ima change my clutch?

My .02: I think your clutch is toast.

Clutch release bearing = throwout bearing.

As for the flywheel, that's up to you. Atleast get your current one resurfaced.

I'm on dialup so I didn't bother to look at the video. However if its making noise with the clutch out its not the throwout/release bearing, which only turns when the clutch pedal is depressed on hondas, some vehicles (chev S-10s I believe have a throwout bearing that turns all the time) Its far more likely that the transmission input shaft bearing is bad.

will it damage the tranny or is it just not the preffered type?

*and an update on the weird noise.... i realized when i let the clutch engage very slowly (taking foot off pedal slowly) it does not make any noise at all. also the engine was leaking from the dizzy i think and it was all over the tranny engine joint, could that have damaged the clutch and thats where all the weird noises are coming from? im sorry if i ask alot but i dont wanna replace the clutch and flywheel and then have to come back again and drop everything to change the tranny cause it was the input shaft.. if its the input shaft i prefer to buy another tranny from a local shop for $100.

Its too heavy, like far too heavy, it will shift like crap when its cold, and will probably start grinding from the syncros not being able to slow down fast enough during shifts. Its not like honda MTF is all that expensive.
