Icon2 2000 Honda Civic Ex D16Y8 - P1399

2000 Honda Civic Ex D16Y8, getting a P1399 code. CEL goes from solid to blinking and the engine is shaking like hell. Timingbelt, spark plugs, ignition cables, water pump and belts all changed @ 75K. Changed distributor at 86K (yesterday), and changed the fuel filter about 2 weeks ago.

I'm getting misfires on cylinders 2, 3 and 4. Double checked the wiring all set.

I've noticed that I'm also burning 1 quart of oil every 3-4 days which may possibly indicate bad valve seals, minor smoke in the exhaust and residue on the the exhaust pipe.

Spark plugs have been changed twice within 10K miles, went with NGK platinum. In checking the plugs again yesterday, I noticed that the #3 plug was black and had round, mushroom look to it, thing was fried.

This issue occurred 3 months after the 75K tune-up. I wonder if the timing is off or I'm getting oil all over the place from bad seals.

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

If you're burning that much oil, you're fouling out your plugs really quickly is my guess. You probably also have fouled o2 sensor and EGR valve too.

I would start with a valve adjustment, replace all plugs and EGR, and possibly o2, but I'd wait on that until you get a code. When you got the 75K tuneup, did it include a valve adjustment? They could have effed it up. If not, they could still be out of adjustment at 75K, which could cause oil burning, smoke, and fouled plugs.

Yeah, no valve adjustment was made. EGR and O2 sensors have not been changed. I'll give that a shot. The code that was displayed was P1399 which simply states misfires. Guess I'll have to wait and see what the dealer comes up with. Thanks for replying!

Is the entire distributor new, including the coil and ICM? If so:

-Check whether unplugging the primary O2 sensor stops the misfiring
-Compression test the cylinders
-Measure the fuel pressure
-Do a Seafoam treatment
