Default thoughts-first oil change (synthetic) and mtf change

well i hit the 5k mark and changed the oil and filter, changed the mtf, and rotated my tires. it was a good day

what i used...
amosil series2000 0w30 (engine)
amsoil syncromesh (tranny)
amsoil eao13 (oil filter)

first, the oil filter is a PITA!!! i expected it to be tight from the factory but geez. with the passenger tire off i tried my hand with no luck. went to kragens and took a spare filter i had. found a perfect oil filter wrench. the kind that goes on the end of the filter and you put a ratchet in and your good to go. well of course theres a heatshield around the oil filter and i couldnt get the wrench to go on far enough. at this point im pretty irritated. i finally decided to do the screwdriver trick. figured it would be the one time mess due to factory over-tightening and id be good for future changes. boy was it stubborn! after 4 holes in the filter i had it off

put the new filter on, filled up the motor and on to the mtf change. very very easy...

impressions-the SI just like the 2 other cars i have ran amsoil in loved it! car was a tad quieter, rev'd more smoothly, and now when i bang gears at 8000 rpm i know shes proteceted the big difference was the mtf. like most others my tranny was also over filled. i would estimate by a good 1/3 of a qt. after driving with the new amsoil mtf for 200 miles i can say that shifts are like butter. the general notchiness i had with the tranny is virtually gone. rev matched downshifts are now even sweeter. all gears feel much more direct and "click-clack" if you will. i have the twm ss w/ cable bushings. i loved the setup but i wasnt really happy with the tightness and random notchiness. i think the tranny being over filled led to some of the problem and the amsoil took care of the rest. i noticed similar positive results when i switched the factory mtf out in my 4x4 tacoma to amsoil.

sorry for the long reading but hope this is some good info for someone.

1st reply ftw!

Glad to hear. I have to look into this amsoil stuff when I'm ready to switch to synthetic. Royal Purple was good but wasn't it you who told me it was not a true synthetic or something? Thanks for the post!

Do you know if I take it to Honda to get amsoil products put in the car, would they do it? I don't know how to do it myself.

hey pete-

ya i have read numerous things about royal purple. most are good things so go with what you like but its my understanding that there street line is more of a synthetic blend and made from convential base stock. i also expect to see a small bump in gas mileage. right now i average 27-28 and should see more in the 28-30 range with the oil plus the motor is fully broken in. well see but the goal is 35mpg on the next highway trip doing 70-75

just dont forget the MTF...i was skeptical but wow what a difference

yep it wont be a problem. just take whatever oil in to the dealer that you want them to use.

also, i plan to keep the car for 200k+ miles so i will use what i feel is the best fluids and maintenace program. but mobil1, royal purple, go with what you like. the most important thing IMO is regular changes and run a good filter

yea, AMSoil is amazing.

I don't know if anyone is familiar with ATVs, but i have an 07' LTR450. While its an amazing fuel injected beast; they have some tranny issues. Alot of them get a terrible whine during a hard ride, used to happen to me 3+ times in an hour ride. I switched to AMSoil synthetic for wet clutch and it hasn't whined since and I've beaten the **** out of it on some long rides.

AMSoil FTW!

I'll most likely use it on my first oil change in my Si...I think I might go with the revised Honda MTF or BG Synchroshift in my tranny though.

Is there only 1 kind to use or is there a specific letter and numbering that i would have to get (i.e. 5w20, 10w30 etc). I want to change my tranny fluid soon so thanks.

@ 3200, went to amsoil 5w30, currently at 4500 and want to do tranny. amsoil does make my motor sound better, or at least i think that. oh well amsoil ftw.

amsoil cost me 50 bucks for 5 quarts. mobile1 filter 10. all in all about 75.00 for the change and .4 quarts of leftover amsoil. whilst expensive, my extensive and i do mean extensive research has concluded with the fact that amsoil is the best you can do for the money. jmo.

amsoil makes a few different tranny oils. you specifically want amsoil "syncromesh"

I also heard that the Amsoil and Royal Purple were great for the tranny. For my tranny change, I used the newer Honda MTF fluid. Using that solved all my tranny issues as well (3rd gear grind, etc), and being a Honda product, I elminate any dealer issues if my tranny breaks.

I have "heard" of dealers refusing warrant transmission repairs because the vehicle was not running an "approved" Honda MTF. I don't know if Amsoil and/or Royal Purple are approved by Honda, but it is something to think about.
