Is it fair to compare a corolla to a civic?
I don't think it's fair to compare a corolla to a civic. Over all design and engine performance? NO car can compare to a civic under its class...

To compare a DX,LX EX yes.
To Compare the Si... no.
I am not to up on my corrolla knowledge but i think the last S model (not sure if they still sell it ) i think had the scion tC 160hp motor in it, which would be pretty nice .
But on the whole the civic newer design is lightyears ahead of it.
I think that they put 96% of their resources into the camry
and the other 4 into the corrolla

There was a Corolla XRS which I just traded in for a Mazdaspeed 3 which is pretty good too. It had the 180hp Celica GTS motor in it stock and was even pretty closely matched with the new Si.

The XRS isn't being produced anymore, right? That was a pretty sweet car itself, although I don't think it was as comparable to an SI as all the XRS owners made it.

Not produced anymore, but like stated at least in straight line speed it ran 15.2-15.4 depending on which magazine tested it. Pretty good for a 4 door economy car.

In a real world comparison, price is the ONLY factor to consider. For instance, if two cars are exactly the same in performance, options, reliability, etc., but there is a $10k price difference, the comparison is moot.
Only pistonheads neglect price to determine the "best" car.

They're thinking about coming out with an AWD Corolla! Honda needs to do this so we can represent in the WRC

They are talking about the XRS which has the 180hp celica GTS engine. Its not produced anymore. They stopped a year or two ago.

AWD turbo honda...... i dream of the day.
so i can shut these STI's the expletive up........
now, its definently not fair to compare these two cars, cause the specs are way different, yet people wont shut the expletive up about the two. when i know we can take these cars, if we had similar specs.

Did the XRS and GTS share the same motor? I know the XRS is only rated at 170hp, while the GTS is 180hp. This has been confusing the crap outta me... is it similar to the '05- '06 RSX-S ratings?

I've been in both. The Corolla, for some reason, seems to be a bit faster than the base civics. It's comparable in fuel economy, size, and features. The big problem I have with it is that it's an old design. It goes through a new cycle next year. The interior for this year's model is comparable to my 6th gen Accord, which looks boring compared to new cars. It's outclassed in its materials and design. It also has a 4 speed auto while the new Civics have 5 speeds.
However, it's greatest advantage is that it comes in several grand below the comparably equipped Civics, which appeals to more people.
I have a feeling the gap will really decrease when the 2008 Corolla is released soon. Right now it's an aging outdated platform- I believe almost a decade old, while the new civic is a totally new design.
They actually held off releasing the new Corolla because the new Civic was so advanced, so they're tweaking the design to compete

I'm going to wait and see the new Corolla before I buy a new daily driver.

Having just compared the cars, and put my money where my mouth is... I suppose.
My impression from the Corolla was that it was a reliable, efficient car... much like the Civic, but a total bore to drive... unlike the Civic. The age of the Corolla's platform shows. While it is a good deal, and a quality car... it drives quite sloppily in comparison, IMO.
It's definitely due for a redesign. Though, I fear they'll still inject that typical of recent Toyota "yawn" factor into it, regardless of how well it might perform (as we all know, numbers are only part of the story).
The Corolla was off my shopping list very quickly. The main competitors were the VW Rabbit 2.5 and the Mazda3. They're both incredibly well equipped for the money and offer a similarly fun driving experience, like the Civic.

Honda CRV - realtime awd (2wd and automatic 4wd when needed)
Honda Element- realtime awd
Honda Pilot- realtime awd
Honda Ridgeline- realtime awd
Prelude at ATTS & 4ws (atts is a form of the SHawd from below) (4ws was 4 wheels STEERING...meaning all 4 wheels turned)
Old Honda civic was awd etc
SH-awd on the RL if what your referring to isn't really AWD but power transfer to where it needs it....
SO where usually you'll get the power to the 2 front wheels in a corner and "hope" that the car hooks and goes where u point it
in an RL the power will alleviate from the front, maybe grip a rear wheel to get the road and transfer the power BACK to the front to pull it out of the corners harder
my descriptions work better with hand puppets & cool pie charts.
