Any way to diagnose 2001 Civic CEL without a scanner?
Hi Folks,
I'm in a bit of a bind and I'm hoping you can give me a hand. I have a 2001 Civic and she got me from Ontario, Canada to Vermont in a snow storm, but while I was struggling up the final icy slope the check engine light came on.
I'd like to drive it home tomorrow, but I'm worried I might be doing some engine damage if I do that without at least diagnosing the CEL before I go. Is there any way to do that without a scanner?
If anyone has any input into what might be the problem, I'm open to that as well. The deets:
- the CEL went on, but I thought nothing of it until a few days later when the car didn't want to shift into drive
- when I tried to put it in drive, the engine was cold and after a few minutes of running it shifted into D3 and then shifted normally between the gears
- I know the transmission fluid is getting close to replacement time
- I checked the gas cap and it was on, but I replaced it and made sure to turn it three clicks just in case that was the problem, and I know it can take a couple trips for it to go out again if that is the problem
Thanks!
