Default Replacement Key

My girlfriend recently purchased a 2001 Honda Civic EX. Do they have the computer chips in the key? If they do, how much is it to purchase a new one from the dealer?

Ya they have a transponder, you gotta talk to honda or find a good smith. You could get a regular key at home depot which will get you into your car in case you lock the keys inside, but of course you will not be able to start the car.

yeah, home depot, 99 cents, whatever stores have them. but those will only open trunk and doors and not start engine. getting a key at honda cost $40 for a key and near $60 for remote. so i say get a remote on ebay (which will work and if u need a reference, PM me) i bought 2 sets off the same guy. and i got 2 replacement keys, 1 each for my 01 and 05. it sux, but its better than being stranded even if your'e 1 block from home without a key.

BTW, make sure the person who is making you a cheap replacement key is experienced at making them. I went to pepboys and they ****ed up my only key, chewed it in half, and they had to call a smith later that night to make me a new transponder key. The whole fiasco wasted half a day. They paid for it, but I had to sit there for so many hours.

heres the part number for your key 35113-S84-A02. the key has a chip in it but the parts department should be able to program the key if they use a t5 key other wise the service department will have to program the key. I know at my dealership they charge a half hr which is $48 because you have to access the computer via a honda tablet. A key smith cam make you a key but ONLY a honda dealership can program the key to start the car!
