SRS light stays on -- can my local mechanic diagnose this?
I have a 2001 Civic LX sedan with just under 50,0000 miles on it. Today the SRS light went on. I have a local guy who now does the work on my car because the dealer I used to take my other Civics to always managed to find $500 of work that needed to be done once the cars were north of 50,000 miles, and both of those Civics blew head gaskets at 107,000 miles where friends with Hondas who had their local guys work on the cars were still driving theirs at upwards of 150,000 miles.
Is there anything that a non-mechanically-inclined person like myself should check first? Or is this something my local guy can diagnose, or is this something that you HAVE to take to a dealer? I know as sure as I'm sitting here that the dealer will tell me I need a new airbag and want to charge me $800.

If it's a faulty seatbelt, Honda should cover the replacement (Lifetime warrenty on seatbelts).

Happened to me too, and all the dealer could tell me was that they couldn't find anything. They said they'd reset the light, and if it came back on then they'd keep looking. So far, it's stayed off for almost a year, so who knows.
