air compressor clutch won't engage when relay bypassed
#1
I have a 2002 honda civic and the clutch on my ac compressor doesn't engage (only clicks letting me know there's power). I bypassed the relay and still just the click but no engagement. thermal protector has continuity and field coil reads 3.7 ohms..... am i missing anything?
sorry I wrote AIR COMPRESSOR but meant ac compressor lol

By no engagement you mean, it engages then lets go? Or are you talking about the relay inside the car?
Jump battery power to the clutch, if the clutch does not engage, either you measure the clutch wrong, meaning you need a new one, or the ground on the body of the compressor to engine ground is broken, I have seen both.
Once running you might want to check the refrigerant pressures.

Re: air compressor clutch won't engage when relay bypassed
The clutch does not turn at all. I put battery power to the clutch by bypassing the relay under the hood which does have the battery voltage. The compressor must be grounded cause when the field coil is connected it clicks once( but does not turn) when I bypass the relay. But when I unplug the wire it doesn't click. I've checked the clutch clearence off the pulley and that seems fine too. Now the ohms reading on the field coil are 3.7. They should be between 3.0 and 3.5. Can this be the cause??? wouldn't there be 0.00 or OL as a reading if the coil was bad???
There's continuity in my preasure switch so I guess the the preasure is Ok. I'll have to get that checked once I can get the compressor running.
Thanks for your reply, I appreciate it.
