has anyone ever tried to airbrush lacquer paint for moderate to major scratches? i find that the touch up paint from the dealer looks the better than spray paint, but the only thing that really make it distinctly noticeable is the edges. if possible to mix 1:1 thinner and touch up paint and then use an airbrush to feather it in, do you guys think it is possible to blend the original paint and the airbrushed paint? this method shouldn't require any major prep work, since touch up paint was meant to be applied as is. if this work, it will save big bucks on paint repair because you do not have to paint the entire piece.

if you are trying to cover up monor scratches
get the paint u need+ clearcoat from paintscratch.com
mask off the area that is being repainted
sand w/ 400 grit
clean
primer
color paint
clearcoat
wetsand w/ 2000 grit
buff out

i hear it so much, but i still do not understand the word buffing. is that the same as polishing and blending? cuz if it is blending, i have no idea how to do it.

yes its the same as polishing. use mother's or meguiars products for this step. blending is a process at body shops where they tint a newly painted body panel to mathc the rest of your car

blending is when a painter fixes sometihng on a car and it needs to get painted...the paint gets sprayed according to the code on the door jam. then the car is wetsanded and buffed to the new paint matches the old paint... its an inbvolved procees... if you are fixing a scratch, if it isnt deep try using a 3M compound made for removing scratches and swirl marks... i forget what its exactly called but your should be able to find it... follow the directions on the bottle... if you have used a buffer on a car b4 then you should be fine, if not and wanna know how... i have an OEM black painted bumper. it got deep craters from bolts carving up on it, but never made it through to form a hole. i was planning on sanding it, then bondo-ing the craters. then sand it again to smooth it out.

now i should end up with a white spot and a large area with black paint. i was thinking about masking the black part, and then black primering it. then airbrush that spot with OEM paint ( touch up paint if needed)in thin coats. then buff out area to make the newly painted area and the old paint match as much as possible. then clear coating the area. and polish again with detailing equipment ( wax?).

is there anything wrong with the steps i plan on taking?

jsut get some black paint in a spray can that is close to your color and paint the whole bumper, your other steps are fine

the point was to not paint the whole bumper.
