Default Transmission Fluid Change

Hello fellow Accord owners I have to change the Trans fluid on my Accord soon its due for one. But my question is it a simple drain and refill like how the service manual says. Or do I have to flush it out like people always tell me. cause I thought that you only have to flush it when it gets rebuild or replaced. And to clean the ATF oil cooler lines. plus I heard there's a filter I can replace or clean is this right or im I forgetting some thing. Any help appreciated.

Drain and fill.....done.

Some have a filter some don't. It would help if you gave the exact year and that (engine size).

Just drain and fill. No flushing machines. There is a filter you can replace, even though Honda claims it doesn't require changing. Here's a link for How-to.

The part number is listed in the link....25450-RAY-003....#7 in the pic

The local dealer should be able to help you out, there are a few online dealerships you can use as well.

Honda dealerships still claim the filter is "lifetime" and doesn't need to be changed. And of course the manual was written way before Honda started recalling the transmissions.

On Honda parts web sites the filter is listed under "TRANSMISSION - AUTOMATIC/AT OIL LEVEL GAUGE - ATF PIPE (V6)" I think OReilly auto parts sells the filter, but not the Honda fluid. Some people fill the transmission through the dipstick, which is very small. I prefer to fill through where the recall jet kit pipe is. Simply remove the bolt holding the bracket, pull the jet kit tube out, and use a long funnel to fill there.

I can only assume they rebuilt the transmission so that it doesn't need the jet kit. If you don't want to assume, you would have to ask them.

I know this thread is old but I replaced my Transmission Fluid with the ATF DW-1 Fluid and its been. Around 3700 miles and have noticed better shifting and it being more smooth. But the performance has been slightly fading and was wondering if changing it again would benefit. since there's still some dirty fluid cycling around in there still.

I change out three quarts as often as it takes to keep the fluid looking clean and red. If the fluid is really dark or brown, you might need to do more than one drain and fill. I never do back-to-back drain and fills, because then I feel like I just poured out the fresh fluid I just put in. So I will wait, usually 10-15k miles between, depends what the fluid looks like each time. I believe HandAaccessories.com has a good deal on a case of DW-1 fluid, which should last a while. I got my last case from them, but that was a few years ago. I changed the filter at 60k, 90k, and will probably change it again at 120k which could be around the end of this year.

Do some reading on a "triple-flush" I've used it when I wasn't sure how a PO maintained the tranny. Without knowing the mileage and history on your car it's hard to say what you should do.

My transmission was replaced at 78,000 miles or so and I replaced the ATF fluid at 132k so it was due for a fluid change.

CHANGE THE FILTER. Screw anyone who disagrees, change the damn filter. Wanna see mine after 130k? Trust me, change the filter.

also, I highly recommend removing that dumb hockey puck that I saw a picture of. Use a fluid passage from a Honda odyssey and a fat trans cooler.
