Icon2 2004 Honda Accord V6 Power Steering Hose Leak

Hey Guys, long time no talk. (forgot my old login/email combo so made a new one, LOL) I have, knock on wood, not had many problems with this car, still running and nearing 100k quickly.

Recently had smoke start coming from the engine bay when driving. Was really worried it was something serious. Go into a oil change place, and they pinpoint the problem as a leak from my power steering feeder line. Called around and the dealer is the only one here that can seem to get the part.

They priced me at 300 parts and labor to fix. I checked around on Majestic Honda, and a couple other places, and I can get the part for 90 bucks. Now I'm not the most mechanically inclined, but can do a good deal of stuff on my own. (Did a radiator, brakes (full pads, fluid and rotors) exhaust, suspension, etc) So I figure it is something I can DIY.

I have the shop manual and the problem is it doesn't give much in the way of replacing the hoses. Has anyone done this or aware of how it is done, that might be able to offer some insight. Trying to save cash and would really prefer to do it myself and save the 200 dollars in shop fees.

Thanks -

Just to make sure, can you post a link (e.g., Majestic) to which specific hose you are referring to?

Okay, we're on the same page. It is also known as the power steering pressure hose. I've changed the hose on other Accords before, so it should be similar.

In the attached picture, you will have to remove or loosen the bolts holding the brackets (circled in red). On some Hondas, it may be tough to access the brackets (yours do not look too bad).

Unplug the electrical connector to the power steering pressure switch. (Don't try to remove the pressure switch until the whole hose is out of the car. You will reuse the pressure switch on the new hose, you may also want to get a new o-ring for the switch.)

Place a large drain pan under the car near the hose end at the bottom of the car. It is recommended to use a flare nut wrench (aka line wrench) on the flare nut to avoid rounding the nut. This nut can be tough to loosen.

The top two bolts are the easiest part of the job.

Also, only use genuine Honda power steering fluid. Other fluids are usually not recommended. Bleed the power steering unit after you are done; since you have the service manual, I won't go into that.

Generally, the power steering pressure hose leak will get worse really fast.

i dont know about honda accords but theres a recall for the tsx, rl and tl for the power steering feed hose. Update hose has aluminum foil wrapped around it. Seen a Tl catch on fire because of the power steering fluid dripping onto the hot exhaust.

that is what I have heard can happen as well. Other than the flare wrench are there any special tools I will need. Also would this be suitable for
a one man job or should I get someone to help?

Depending on your car, you might have to remove a few other things (e.g., brackets, etc.) to access and remove the hose.

I have heard a couple conflicting stories on this already. Some people say it is doable, just hard to get to some of the bolts. Other people on forums, that work a dealership of course, say without racking the car and unbolting the motor mounts/jacking the back of the engine, it isn't possible. This is getting frustrating LOL.

I'm looking to replace the identical hose on my 06 V6 accord. OP, did you ever have any luck doing this yourself?

I replaced the one on my 03 V6 myself. A Honda tech will tell you to unbolt the rear engine mount, jack the engine up, and pull the hose out under the mount. I was able to bend the metal part of the hose just enough to get it through the mount. You have to be very careful not to kink the metal part, because another hose is another $100. I bought a 14mm line wrench to remove the flare nut on the rack. Don't assume yours is also 14mm, try a regular 14mm wrench on the nut first to make sure. I removed everything from over the top of the engine, because you simply can't see anything from under the car. Good luck

Other parts stores can get the hose for you, but it will cost just as much as the Honda hose.

To soon2bdropped - My power steering hose went out on my 2004 V6 Accord yesterday (09-30-12). I came to Honda Tech for my friend who was going to fix it and saw your post about recalls. I looked and the recall was expanded to include my car only two days before (09-28-12). They towed my car and I picked it up and it did not cost me a dime. Thank you so much for your post. Without it I would not have known.

Must not happen on every car, yet. 110k and no leak on mine yet, but I suppose it would be worth it for them to take care of any potential problem.

As always, not all Hondas/Acuras are affected, call you local service dept. and give them you VIN # to see if your car is on the list.....Bad news, Honda's updated replacement is not due until April 2013

Mine started leaking fluid in June 2011. After looking at the situation, I decided to have the local Honda service dept. replace the part. I was dinged $579 ($420 for labor). I've contacted American Honda to seek re-imbursement. My car had about 92K when it failed. Should I assume the replacement hose they used at that time is the same as what is being recalled now? Is there a way to tell visually? The part number they used (according to the Invoice) appears to be the original number.

I think you can safely assume it's the same hose that was on the car originally. Since they don't have enough "new" hoses to do them all now, I suspect they will add some heat shield or insulation around that part of the hose, to hold us over till they get the revised parts. Since both our hoses were changed recently, they will probably last until the "new" hoses get to the dealerships.

Did the hose rub on something? Did it get kinked? Did the hose itself just get "tired"?

Curious, as I'm not sure how that could fail, looking at mine.

I can only guess that either the heat from the engine, or a weakness in the hose where that joint is, or both. Mine wasn't really leaking, but it was wet around that metal joint. I figured I'd change it, before it made a mess everywhere. Still haven't found my receipt for the hose, so I don't know if I'll be able to get a refund for it. I must have 100 receipts for this car, and as luck would have it, the hose is not on any of them.

I received tentative approval for a reimbursement from American Honday (6-8 weeks out, though). They also confirmed that the hose installed in June 2011 will need to be replaced as part of the recall campaign. I'll wait until the replacements are well under way, since my hose will probably last another 6 years or so and there are lots of folks who should get replacements ASAP.

Yes, that's what I was thinking. Since I just replaced the hose last year, it should last another 5 years. I'm going to let the dealership practice this procedure on a few thousand cars, before I bring my car in. Then hit them with reimbursment for the hose I bought for it. The reimbursment is going to be just enough to pay for a new window regulator.

Thanks for posting this! I called the Honda dealer and all I had to do was pay to have my car towed there and they took care of the rest. I didn't want to risk damage to my pump.

honda want a lot of money to supply a spare pipe
