Re: OFF ROAD ABILITIES
well, the autos in the 98-02 accords are all garbage, i4 or v6. and from what ive heard, i dont think an auto is the best for a rock crawler?

Re: OFF ROAD ABILITIES
the autos from those years are dogshit....the engine is great if you want to boost without having to build it, but if you want to go N/A i would use a H22

ummm.... what? you realize that accords are FWD not 4WD right? well even though i am pretty sure you aren't serious about this. i'll answer your question. GO BUY A JEEP AND GTFO!!!

buuuut the f22 trannies are only $200 each for the JDM replacements. once nice perk to a really heavy trans that frequently dies.

Well, he did state 'rock crawler'. Albeit hes talking about a cage with wheels and ridiculous suspension travel. IIRC Saturn/Ecotec drivetrains are used. Mount the engine transmission 90* from transverse to longitudinal. Rather than having a long powertrain engine>trans>transfer case>d shafts. He can have a rather simple power pack layout. Connect two driveshafts to where the axleshafts would normally go. Allowing for the engine to be mounted in the center of the vehicle.
As for the OPs question regarding the AT. I have no idea how much abuse the FD in the AT can take from the backfeed of shock loads from two axles slipping and catching on terrain. Also don't forget, Hondas (except S2000) engines run counter-clockwise. So you will have to have the front of the engine facing back.

O/P as it appears you have realized you are in the wrong forum for this. Try posting this in a rock crawler forum. Maybe someone out there has done it already and could prove me wrong. It just seems like a pointless project to me. Why not buy something that at least comes stock with 4WD or AWD and preferably a decent amount of suspension travel. I dont even want to think about the amount of fab work it would take to turn an Accord into a rock crawler.

Re: OFF ROAD ABILITIES
rocrunr,
There was someone else on here who used an F-series motor in their rockcrawler (don't remember if it was an F22 or F23), although I don't remember what transmission they used. I believe they started a thread asking about ECUs, but I don't remember. You might want to try finding that thread and talking to that user.
On a side note, the F23 is the 4-cylinder motor that came in 98-02 Accords, and F22 variants came in 90-97 Accords.

Re: OFF ROAD ABILITIES
i believe he was refering to the fact that he still only has 1 post. not just that it was his first post. my guess is that yes he is lying. but even if he isn't i see no reason to do something like this. there are much better engines/trans combos for this application. like um... say one that is built with 4WD in mind. my opinion is that if you dont have the no how to do this build then it isnt worth asking about. because it probably isnt within your abilities. "do able" to some people on here is probably not even within your realm of understanding yet alone executing.
can a mod please lock this thead? the OP hasn't even posted on another thread since his first post yet alone this one.

Flame suit is on being that this is my first post here. This can be done, has been done, and works with great success. All this talk about not being a good idea, not reading the OP post, here is a thread to shut all you up and help out the OP.

Re: OFF ROAD ABILITIES
I totally understand where you guys are coming from calling BS. I have just seen done what he is asking about so I am trying to help. And I thing his question was warranted, especially since this is an accord forum and he is planning to use the drive train out of one. I probably wouldn't come back and ask any more questions with the responses he got.
Thanks for the reassurance, I am seriously thinking about getting out of the vw world so I have been lurking around...

If anything the weak points of the '98 A/T may yet to be addressed. Rather than 'Accord automatics are 'teh sucky'!11' answer, someone must know what fails in the A/Ts, clutches/bands/TC/etc. Outside of high mileage and abuse of course.
So, getting this back on track...
What are the weak points of the '98 A/T in Accords? What causes them to fail. And are there known issues to address to improve the durability of the unit?

And as 1st_mk1 said, this HAS been done before. It will probably still be done in the future.

Re: OFF ROAD ABILITIES
idk why you would pick this combo, except for it being lightweight and you probably got it for free, but do the math and see how much extra it would cost to fab everything up.. there's 4 cylinder truck motors that are probably a lottt easier to match up to a gearbox with 4x4, and have more torque
