just go for it man! its your car... but if you get in an accident and the insurance company finds out you took the one with the bag out they will try and get out of everything, so just be careful with that part. o and i have also heard stories of ppl having the airbag go off while removing it, idk if they are true though.

i guess you're looking for an aftermarket wheel... when the wheel in my wifes 01 accord started to slowly crumble (why the cheap foam rubber in these...) i changed it out for a leather one from the EX V6 model. i was able to reuse the airbag and all wheel mounted controls.

i can't recommend touching any part of the SRS without following procedure from a repair manual to dissable it. consequences are very serious otherwise (propery loss, personal injury, slow painful death...)

so there are other options for upgrades if you hadn't made up your mind and you did still want to keep the airbags

If you will remove the steering wheel and/or disconnect the air bag, YOU MUST disconnect the battery first and let it sit for 15 minutes before working on the car. After those 15 minutes, go ahead and disconnect the yellow wiring for the SRS and just remove the wheel.

YES! Please do what Gian says. Even with the car off, the air bag can be set off. The SRS system has a capacitor in it, so even if power is off the airbag can still be set off. Like if you are sitting in your car in a parking lot and someone hits it hard enough, they may go off if it moves the sensors enough, as the capacitor will be charged.

I believe it is supposed to 30 minutes you disconnect it for, but I may be wrong. Either way, just pull the entire battery out of the car just to be sure that the negative does not accidently hit the post or something like that.

Also make sure the steering wheel is for your generation and all. Different generations may have a different spline count and will not match up. Now you can get an OEM steering wheel with the airbag in it. Like the type R steering wheels. They were made by Momo for honda, but I do not know which one's will match up.

Did you even look in the FAQ section??

Always look there first for answers to any of your questions.

MuffinMan did a writeup for this exact thing.......

I have never seen an "aftermarket" wheel with an airbag. I have seen people run like the MOMO wheels from certain Honda models (like Type R's) and have those airbags, however I think your year has an updated SRS system and may not work properly with those airbags.

I would suggest seeing if a S2000 wheel would fit, incredibly nice upgrade and fits on the 96/97 Accord.

Well I don't want an airbag in the after market wheel but I looked at adapters and it said not for use on steering wheels that come stock with an airbag

WTH? I have never seen that phrase.

NRG Short Hub
NRG Quick Release
Follow the WekSauce install guide on Honda-Tech for install
Follow my FAQ for how to reset SRS so the passenger side works
Follow my FAQ for how to wire the horn

Wait, after typing that I know what they are stating. They're saying you are not to make your stock wheel with an airbag bolted onto a quick release. Which makes perfect sense. If you go aftermarket and don't want an airbag then you can use the NRG setup. If you want the airbag you cannot use a quick release type setup, you'd bolt it straight on.

I would suggest the quick release as well. Otherwise the wheel will be too far from you. And don't skimp and get an eBay knock off setup. Get an NRG one.
