Starter cranks but no 12V to the coil
Hi guys!
I have been trying to start my honda civic (1996) after its been not used for 2 years. When I left it 2 years ago, it worked, but now I cannot make it running. So, something went off during this time. You are my last hope since Ive been trying to fix it last month)
Here is the situation, I replaced a battery, the starter seems working, the fuel pump works, there is no "check-engine" light, but there is NO voltage coming to distributor, and therefore there is no spark. I tested ignitor and coil, replaced ignitor cause it was bad. But the bottom line, there is no voltage arriving on the coil '+'. Also I checked the big wire nexus that powers up the distributor, and there is no voltage coming to it.
Does any of you have experience with this kind of problem? Could you recommend me something, please!)
Really hoping to find the answer here. I suspect it might be a problem in ignition wiring system, but I have no idea how to test it.
Thank you!!!!

Check the ignition switch and/or the 12v BLK/YEL wire between the ignition switch and the distributor/coil. If you are not getting power to the coil, that would be the place to look.
Now if you are getting 12v at the coil but no spark. It's time to start looking at the cranking/engine start ignition timing related sensors, TDC/CKP.

OK so with the ignition on (II) there should be 12v going to the coil. If not, there is a problem with the ignition switch or the wire between.

Well, i tried to start car two ways - with key and with direct wire from battery '+' to the starter wire. Both times starter cranks. There is no 12V in distributor. Regarding wires, would you know a way to test them? Do you know if there might be a fuse problem, there is 12V coming out of fuse box though.
I also Looked on possibility of CrankSheft sensor being bad, but Im still researching before going down there to test (its a bit complicated and I still did not get a definitive answer that it can be CS sensor).

Re: Starter cranks but no 12V to the coil
The 12v power source to the distributor comes through the ignition switch @ pin IG1. Power to the starter goes through ignition switch @ pin ST. Therefore just becuase the ignition switch is sending power out to the starter (ST) . That doesn't mean it is also sending power out to the ignition (IG1)
And yes there is a fuse under the dash for the IG1 circuit. IIRC it's fuse No.9 15A.

Re: Starter cranks but no 12V to the coil
Hey - I checked IG1 in fuse box - its getting 12V when I remove the fuse, but how do I check the fuse itself.
So, now Im confused - when I power up under the hood, am I suppose to have a ignition turned on with key? I hope its not an obvious mistake Im doing.
I followed one of the diagrams on internet, and it seems like ignition system wiring issue. Is there a way to check the wires?

When testing the ignition voltage under the hood. The key should be in the on II position or KOEO. (key on engine off)
If you want to check the voltage of the BLK/YEL wire. first you disconnect the distributor connector containing the BLK/YEL wire. Then you turn the ignition to the II position. Using your voltmeter place the red probe in the connector and touch the pin for the BLK/YEL wire. Then touch the black probe to the vehicle chassis (ground). You should see battery voltage (approx 10-13v).

I have the same problem can anyone help? I just bought 1996 honda civic ex d16 y8 and i had to tighten down the vaules because it was ticking and i tighten it down and replaced my spark plugs and put it all back to together, then started it and it ran fine but i didint realize i was out of gas and it died cause there was no gas so i tryed to start it a couple more times and it wouldint start so i put gas in it and then now it cranks over but theres no spark going to the engine i dont know whats going on someone got any ideas?
