My car has the tendency to stall while idling, and especially when I drive in traffic. As I start to brake in bumper-to-bumper traffic and press the clutch, my idle goes from 800 down to below 500, then even lower until it stalls itself. It also happens when I just idle there while in traffic. I searched Google and read something on an Audi forum that's similar to my problem and they said to clean the throttle body and check for vacuum leaks, also if the car has a CEL. My car is a 96 Accord EX, I have a P1457 code, in case that helps.

That code is for an EVAP system problem. Just looked around and those codes are very commonly related to EGR codes and problems. A clogged EGR valve/system causes ALL those stalling/idling problems. I'd start with a good cleaning of your EGR valve/ports. May fix your idling/stalling problems and cure that code as it has for other people. Good Luck. CT FTW lol.

I observed today that the problem occurs when the clutch is depressed. Not every time it's depressed, but sometimes. Any clue, guys?

sounds like your egr is pumping exhuast gas at idle.

try removing the egr vacuum hose. if the problem goes away then your egr solenoid, egr constant vacuum control cylinder, or ecu is malfunctioning. a solenoid and cvc can be obtained at a pull a part or other junkyard for cheap or free if you have a girlfirend with a purse

the egr valve could also be stuck open constantly allowing exhaust gas in. you can maually move the egr diaphram with your hand. pushing up on the the diaphram opens the valve and should cause the car to low idle or stall. if it does not effect the idle at all then the egr ports are clogged

I am not very familiar too much under the hood. Is that the rubber hose that goes on the valve cover in the center towards the back?

first search google for you egr valve or go to autzone or something and have them point it out. being familiar under the hood is going to be a key factor in attempting to make repairs on your vehicle. i would highly suggest in investing in a haynes service manual

I've watched quite a few videos on cleaning the EGR ports for the Accord. I didn't say I didn't know what an EGR valve was, I was just trying to find out whether or not you were referring to the vacuum hose on the valve cover. I didn't know that the EGR had anything to do with my stalling issue, otherwise this thread would have never been created.

Now, I've heard that the fuel pressure has to be relieved before removing the fuel rail. Would that mean removing the gas cap?

Yup remove gas cap to relieve fuel pressure.
