I did a drain/refill of my ATF this weekend (96 Accord 4cyl EX)

I looked at the specs, and it says 2.5 qt for a change and 6.3qt for an overhaul. I drained almost exactly 4 quarts, so that is what I put back in also.

Two questions
1 - Did I overfill it? The dipstick is really awkward to put in and take out, so I don't trust that very much because I am sure that it bangs against the walls of the tube going in/coming out.

2 - If I did overfill it, does it matter?

if you "topped it off" you would be okay. if you "overfilled" it you are in an overkill situation in which you may if not will blow you tranny seals.

Did you bother using the fill bolt and sticking your finger in it?

When the car is cold, the fluid should just barely come up to the threads on the fill bolt. That's how you know if you've filled it up enough or not.

No fill bolt on automatic transmissions - there is a dipstick under the hood.

I have never done an AT tranny fill on a Honda personally, so I'm just throwing this out there. Would I be crazy to assume that what comes out should go back in. The 4qts you put back in is well within the 6.3 qt fill level. Or maybe it was overfilled by someone previously?

I would say that if you replaced what came out and you had no issues with or leaks in your tranny prior to the refill you should be fine. Check the dip stick

use the damn dipstick to measure it. the car has to be up to normal engine temp and then turn it off and check it. honda made it for a reason.

and btw if you over fill it it will foam out and you'll either be ok or lower, you won't blow out any seals.

there is a overflow on it so it leaks out if it gets past a certain point

I haven't lost any fluid yet, so it sounds like I haven't hit the overflow point yet.

I think I may just leave it alone. The honda ATF fluid is damn expensive, so I don't really want another drain/refill right now.

Next time though, I'll use the damn dipstick ;-)

I know its a pain in the "S" to check tranny fluid in your car. I've been throu that b4, I know hot it is bro.
Whatever you do, dont turn your car off and check it like "Sony224242424or whatever" told you to. The car has to be running at the normal operating temperature for you to check the tranny fluid. Just keep on checking and whiping of the dip stick everytime. It might take you 10x to do it, but trust me udw2 overfill your tranny. It'll create too much pressure and blow the seals.
I've seen that you have already dropped the thread, but just wanted to put my 2cents in.

nah, I appreciate the reply.

Maybe after I get my tax refund, I'll flush it again. I think that the only thing going for me now is that the tranny had 4qt in it for a long time, and no broken seals yet. So, I think keeping it at that level might be fine for now.

You cant go wrong with adding 4qts if 4 came out. A quick question though, did you use a tranny machine?

No, just a drain through the tranny bolt.

you are an idiot. it says right in the god damn manual to warm up the car and then turn it off and check it while its at normal operating temperature. don't reply if you don't know.

i just drained my 94 ex auto and refill it back with exactly 2.5 and its on the full mark

btw i left the car sat over night before i check the fluid level again

bring the car up to normal operating temperature. park it. turn it off. check the dipstick

is it honestly that hard?

but hey its your tranny not mine. i guess honda wouldn't know how to check the fluid on their own transmissions
